Chapter 4 - The Breaching of the Door

The heavy deadbolt groaned as Evan threw his shoulder against the apartment door once more, sending a shower of dry flakes from the cracked wooden frame cascading onto the welcome mat outside. The sound of splintering timber shattered the fragile silence of Carrie’s living room, leaving no doubt that the lock would fail within seconds. My mind was reeling, anchored only by the damning medical report clutched in my trembling fingers and the devastating confession still hanging in the air between my sister and me.

“Open the door, Marina! I know you’re in there!” Evan’s voice bellowed, thick with rage and desperation.

“Carrie, what is happening?” I demanded, my voice sharp and laced with a terrifying realization as I thrust the fertility clinic report toward her face. “Whose name is on this paper? Why did Jeff text you? Tell me the truth right now before I open that door myself!”

Carrie stepped back, raising her hands defensively as the door rattled under another brutal blow from the hallway. Tears carved clean paths through the dust and makeup on her cheeks, her chest heaving with ragged breaths.

“I didn't want any of this to happen, Marina,” she sobbed, backing away until her spine hit the bookshelves. “Evan and Jeff—they planned the whole thing over a year ago. They backed me into a corner.”

“Planned what?” I screamed, my voice cracking under the crushing weight of betrayal. “What does Jeff have to do with my pregnancy?”

“Open the damn door or I’ll kick it off its hinges!” Evan roared outside, his fist slamming against the wood with a thunderous crash that shook the windowpanes.

With a deafening crack, the metal strike plate tore free from the doorframe, and the heavy wooden door swung violently inward, slamming against the interior wall. Evan stood in the threshold, his chest heaving, his tie loosened, and his eyes wide and bloodshot. But he wasn't alone. Peering anxiously over his shoulder was his brother Jeff, looking as though he might throw up right there on the welcome mat.

Evan took one stride into the living room, his gaze darting immediately to the white papers clutched in my hand. All the color drained from his face, leaving him looking hollowed out and desperate.

“Put that down, Marina,” Evan said, his voice dropping from a furious roar to a low, pleading hiss as he took another step forward. “Don’t listen to a single word your sister says. She’s the one who helped orchestrate this entire mess behind my back.”

“Don’t you dare put this on her,” I snarled, stepping away from the sofa with the medical report clutched like a weapon. “I saw the text from Jeff. I saw the consent form. I want to know right now why your brother’s name is listed as the biological donor on a fertility clinic file for my pregnancy!”

The room went dead silent, save for the heavy, ragged breathing of the four adults trapped inside the small apartment. Jeff flinched visibly, burying his face in his hands and groaning softly as the ugly truth was finally dragged out into the harsh light of day.

Evan stopped dead in his tracks, his shoulders slumping as the illusion of control shattered completely around him. He didn't deny it. He didn't yell. He just stared at the floor with a defeated, hollow expression that sent a sickening chill straight down my spine.

“You knew,” I whispered, staring at my husband with a mixture of horror and disgust. “You couldn't have biological children because of your vasectomy, but you didn't want our family to know the truth. So you and your brother made a sick arrangement behind my back.”

“It was supposed to keep our marriage together,” Evan said quietly, his voice hollow and pathetic as he finally looked up to meet my eyes. “We were falling apart, Marina. You wanted a child more than anything in the world, and I couldn't give you one naturally. This was the only way.”
