Chapter 8 - The Mother-in-Law’s Gambit

Eleanor Vance pushed open the consultation room door without knocking, her posture rigid and her designer handbag clutched like a shield against her chest. Detective Miller, who had just re-entered the room behind her, stepped forward with a hand raised to block her path.
“Ma’am, this is a restricted area. You cannot barge in here—”
“Save it, Detective,” Eleanor interrupted, her voice sharp and dripping with the cold authority of a woman accustomed to buying her way out of any crisis. Her gaze bypassed the detective entirely and locked directly onto me. “I know what Evan and Jeff did. I know about the clinic, and I know about the fraudulent consent forms.”
I stood up slowly from the plastic chair, my muscles tensing as I stared at my mother-in-law.
“So you’ve known all along,” I said, my voice dangerously calm. “You watched me cry over negative tests for two years while you and your golden-boy sons laughed behind my back.”
“I didn't know the specifics of how they executed it until this morning,” Eleanor retorted sharply, though a flicker of guilt crossed her patrician features. “Evan came to me in a panic after the party, confessing everything. Do you have any idea what a public trial and a felony conviction will do to our family name, Marina? The foundation, the real estate holdings, the medical board seat—it will all be wiped out overnight.”
“That sounds like a conversation you should be having with your criminal sons, not with me,” I replied, taking a step toward her. “They violated my bodily autonomy. They committed fraud. They belong behind bars.”
“And what about the child?” Eleanor countered, her voice dropping into a venomous hiss as she took a step closer, pointing a manicured finger directly at my stomach. “That baby carries Vance blood. My blood. Do you seriously think my family is going to let you walk away and raise a Vance heir in obscurity, or worse, use it as leverage in a messy divorce settlement?”
Detective Miller stepped firmly between us, his badge catching the harsh glare of the overhead fluorescent lights.
“Mrs. Vance, threatening or attempting to intimidate a witness and victim of a felony crime is a very quick way to join your sons in a holding cell,” the detective warned, his voice low and uncompromising. “Step away from Mrs. Vance immediately, or I will have you removed from this precinct by force.”
Eleanor glared at the detective, her chest heaving with suppressed rage. She smoothed down the lapel of her Chanel blazer, adjusted her diamond tennis bracelet, and cast one final, venomous look in my direction.
“You think you’ve won, Marina,” Eleanor whispered coldly, her eyes flashing with a malicious certainty. “You think a flash drive and a restraining order will protect you. But you don't know the half of what my family is capable of when we’re pushed into a corner. Enjoy your little victory while it lasts. Because by the time the courts finish reviewing our family trust stipulations, you won't even have the legal right to keep the clothes on your back, let alone the child inside you.”
Without waiting for a response, she turned on her heel and marched out of the office, her heels clicking sharply against the linoleum floor until the heavy outer door swung shut behind her.
Carrie sank back into her chair, her face paler than before.
“She’s not bluffing, Marina,” Carrie whispered, trembling. “The Vance family trust has clauses that give them absolute custody rights over any biological heir born into the lineage, regardless of marital status or custody disputes. When they set up the clinic procedure, they made sure their legal advisors built a loophole into the foundational bylaws.”

Detective Miller turned back to his terminal, his brow furrowed in deep concentration as he quickly typed a series of commands.
“Don't panic yet, ladies,” the detective said, his eyes scanning the rapidly scrolling lines of data on his screen. “If those trust bylaws were drafted using fraudulently obtained genetic material and unauthorized medical procedures, any court in the state will void them as unconscionable and illegal contracts. But it means we have to move faster than they do. My officers have just detained Evan and Jeff at their downtown office. They’re being brought in for formal booking right now.”
