Chapter 4 - THE BRUISE THAT TELLS THE STORY

I gently slid the sleeve of Chloe’s oversized cotton pajama shirt up past her elbow, revealing a cluster of dark, purplish bruises shaped like distinct fingers wrapping around her forearm. The discoloration was deep, suggesting significant pressure applied with malicious intent rather than the random scrape of an accidental fall.

Jonah’s face went instantly pale, the color draining from his cheeks as he stared at the exposed skin, though he desperately tried to maintain his outward composure. "She bruises easily," Jonah stammered, his voice lacking its previous authoritative edge. "You know how delicate her circulation is with her condition. She grabbed the counter wrong when she lost her balance."

"People don't bruise in the exact shape of a grown man's palm and fingers when they fall against a flat kitchen counter, Jonah," I retorted coldly, my training as an investigator allowing me to dissect his excuses with surgical precision. "That is a grip mark. Someone grabbed her, spun her around, and threw her against the refrigerator door."

Chloe looked down at her arm, a single tear spilling over her lashes and tracking slowly down her pale cheek. She didn't say a word, but her silence was deafening, a crushing confirmation that shattered whatever remaining credibility Jonah's alibi possessed.

"You're making things up based on your weird paranoia," Eleanor barked from the hallway, marching into the bedroom to insert herself directly into the confrontation. "She's clumsy, everyone in this family knows it. She drops mugs, she trips over rugs, and now her sister wants to play detective and ruin a happy marriage over a minor bruise."

"This isn't a happy marriage, Eleanor, and it hasn't been for a very long time," I said, standing up slowly from the edge of the bed to tower over her with an unyielding intensity. "This is an enclosure. A controlled environment where your son isolates a vulnerable woman so he can abuse her without witnesses."

"Watch your mouth, Karina," Jonah hissed, stepping dangerously close to the bed, his fists clenched tightly at his sides as his mask of calm completely disintegrated. "You are walking into my house, insulting my mother, and gaslighting my wife. Get out. Get out right now before I throw you out myself."

"You won't be throwing anyone out, Jonah," I replied calmly, reaching into my jacket pocket and pulling out my official investigator badge, letting it catch the light of the bedside lamp. "Because as of five minutes ago, when I called local protective services from my car before entering the driveway, an emergency welfare case was officially opened on Chloe's behalf."

Jonah froze, his eyes locking onto the leather-bound badge case in my hand, the color draining completely from his face as the reality of what I did for a living finally set in. He had assumed I was just a worried sister; he had no idea he had picked a fight with a senior investigator specializing in domestic exploitation and vulnerable adult abuse.
