Chapter 7 - ELEANOR’S DESPERATE GAMBIT

Realizing that Jonah’s aggressive denials and clumsy fabrications were sinking their case entirely, Eleanor stepped forward, attempting a calculated pivot to salvage whatever dignity or legal defense they had left. Her face smoothed over into an expression of theatrical, tearful concern that reeked of calculated manipulation.
"Alright, alright, let's all just calm down and be reasonable," Eleanor said, her voice softening into a trembling, grandmotherly tone as she dabbed at the corner of her dry eyes with her sleeve. "Maybe... maybe Jonah lost his temper for a brief second. We've all been under so much stress lately with the house renovations and Chloe's medical expenses."
Jonah whipped his head around to stare at his mother in absolute shock, clearly unprepared for her sudden betrayal of his rigid alibi. "Mom, what are you doing? Don't start playing that game—"
"Hush, Jonah, let me speak," Eleanor interrupted sharply, glaring at her son with a look that signaled him to shut his mouth before he dug their grave any deeper. She turned her tearful gaze back to me, clasping her hands together in a pleading gesture. "He's a good man at heart, Karina. He just gets overwhelmed. Let's not involve the police or official agencies over a single lapse in judgment. We can get counseling. We can fix this quietly."
I watched Eleanor perform her carefully choreographed pivot, noting how easily she shifted from aggressive denial to tactical minimization the moment the structural integrity of their lies gave way. It was a classic abuser-enabler playbook, designed to buy time, avoid legal consequences, and sweep systemic violence under the rug as a mere family disagreement.
"A single lapse in judgment?" I repeated, my voice ice-cold as I stared down Eleanor's theatrical performance. "That bruise on her arm is weeks deep in pattern accumulation, Eleanor. This isn't a sudden lapse in judgment; it's a chronic pattern of physical and psychological intimidation that you actively enabled and covered up every single day."
"That is a vicious accusation!" Eleanor snapped, dropping her tearful facade instantly as her true, venomous frustration resurfaced. "You come into our home like an uninvited storm, tearing apart a marriage, and you expect everyone to just bow down to your little official badge?"
May you like
"I don't expect you to bow down, Eleanor; I expect you to pack a bag for my sister while I call the local sheriff's deputies waiting at the end of your driveway to serve the emergency removal order," I replied, pulling my phone out of my pocket and tapping the screen with decisive speed.
Jonah lunged forward instinctively toward the nightstand where Chloe’s phone and car keys were resting, clearly desperate to cut off my communication before backup could arrive. "You're not calling anyone!" he roared, his desperation boiling over into outright recklessness as he reached for the device.
