Chapter 6 - THE MOUNTING EVIDENCE AND CONTRADICTIONS

Jonah stopped dead in his tracks, chest heaving as he glared at me with pure venom, realizing that his physical intimidation was completely useless against my professional training and unyielding stance. He looked over at his mother, silently pleading for backup, but Eleanor looked just as shaken and cornered as he was.

"You're destroying our family over a silly argument," Eleanor muttered, her voice losing its aggressive edge as she tried a desperate pivot toward emotional manipulation. "Every couple fights, Karina. Every household has accidents. You're blowing this out of proportion because you've always resented Jonah for taking Chloe away from your control."

"My control?" I scoffed, letting out a short, humorless laugh that underscored the absurdity of her accusation. "Chloe wasn't under my control; she was trapped under your son's thumb, isolated from her friends, stripped of her independence, and too terrified to speak out because you two convinced her that nobody would believe her."

Chloe nodded slowly, finding her voice for the first time with genuine strength. "Every time I tried to leave or talk to someone, Eleanor, you told me I was ungrateful," she said, her voice steadying as she looked directly at her mother-in-law. "And Jonah... Jonah threatened to take away my medical support equipment and tell the courts I was mentally unfit if I ever complained about his temper."

Jonah flinched as those words left Chloe’s mouth, a flash of pure guilt crossing his face before he quickly masked it with defensive anger. "She's lying! She's making things up because she wants out of the marriage and wants to take everything I've worked for!"

"Nobody is taking anything from you except your ability to abuse vulnerable people, Jonah," I said calmly, pulling out my notepad and flipping to a clean page. "Let's review your timeline of events, just for the record. Downstairs, you claimed Chloe bumped into the refrigerator while walking unassisted. Upstairs, your mother claimed she tripped over a rug in the hallway. But the physical impact mark is in the kitchen near the lower handle, and Chloe's medical records show she requires a specialized support frame to walk unassisted—meaning she couldn't have been wandering around the kitchen unassisted at 2 AM in the dark."

Jonah’s jaw tightened, the intricate web of lies he had spun collapsing in real-time as each logical contradiction exposed the deliberate falsehood at the core of his defense. He had relied on sloppy cover stories, assuming that an emotional sister would simply scream, lose her temper, and storm out without asking structural questions.

"You didn't check her medical files," Jonah whispered, horror dawning in his eyes as he realized how thoroughly I had anticipated his narrative traps.

"As her emergency proxy and a senior investigator, I have access to her medical baseline and social support logs," I replied, clicking my pen shut with a sharp, definitive snap. "Which means every false statement you gave tonight constitutes filing a false report during an active abuse investigation."
