Chapter 9 - THE ARRIVAL OF THE AUTHORITIES

The heavy thud of heavy boots echoing up the wooden staircase signaled the arrival of the county sheriff's deputies, cutting through the tense silence of the bedroom instantly. Jonah turned toward the doorway, his face draining of all color as two uniformed officers appeared in the corridor, their expressions stern and professional.
"Deputy Harris, County Sheriff's Department," the lead officer announced, stepping into the bedroom with his hand resting casually near his utility belt. "We received an expedited welfare escalation and protective custody request linked to this address. What's the situation here?"
I stepped forward, pulling my identification and badge out clearly for the deputies to verify within the first three seconds of their entry. "Senior Investigator Karina Vance, State Department of Vulnerable Adult Protection. I initiated the welfare call after receiving a distress signal from the victim, Chloe Vance-Miller, indicating physical assault and false imprisonment."
Jonah stepped forward, his hands raised in an exaggerated gesture of innocence as he tried to regain control of the narrative before the deputies could process my report. "Officer, she's lying! This is a domestic dispute blown completely out of proportion by an intrusive sister. My wife fell over a rug, and her sister barged into our home making wild accusations!"
Deputy Harris looked from Jonah to Eleanor, then shifted his gaze toward Chloe sitting pale and bruised against the headboard, before finally looking back at my official credentials. "Sir, step back from the bed, please. Keep your hands where we can see them," Deputy Harris commanded, his tone dropping into an authoritative register that left no room for argument.
Eleanor tried to insert herself between the deputy and her son, waving her hands dismissively. "You can't just listen to her! She's biased! We demand to speak to our attorney before anyone makes any statements or moves—"
"Ma'am, step back or you will be detained for interfering with an official protective investigation," the second deputy warned, gently guiding Eleanor away from the center of the room with a firm, immovable hand.

Chloe finally spoke up, her voice clear and steady for the first time all evening, cutting through the noise in the room like a beacon of absolute truth. "He pushed me, Deputy. He grabbed my arm, threw me against the refrigerator downstairs, and threatened to take away my medical support if I ever told anyone."
Jonah opened his mouth to deny it, but the words caught in his throat as Deputy Harris pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt with a metallic click that echoed loudly in the small bedroom.
