Chapter 13 - Three Hearts, One Crown

The darkness didn't last long. I was pulled back to reality by the sharp, metallic smell of antiseptic and the sound of a thin, high-pitched cry.

I forced my heavy eyelids open. The bright surgical lights were blinding, but as my vision cleared, I saw Dr. Evans lifting a small, slippery, crying bundle into the air.

"Baby A is out," the doctor announced, his voice filled with relief. "A boy. Healthy. Strong lungs."

A second later, another cry, slightly softer but just as determined, echoed through the room.

"Baby B is out," my mother called out, her hands wrapping the second infant in a warm sterile blanket. "A girl. She has your nose, Vivien."

But the room didn't relax. The monitors suddenly began to emit a long, continuous drone. My blood pressure was plummeting, the red numbers dropping into a dangerous spiral as my heart struggled against the shock of the surgery.

"We have a complication with Baby C," Dr. Evans warned, his hands moving frantically inside the incision. "The placenta is detaching too quickly. She's losing her oxygen supply. Vivien, you need to stay with us! Don't slip away!"

Adrian’s face appeared over mine, his eyes wild with a terror I had never seen in him. He grabbed my shoulders, his voice roaring over the sound of the alarms. "Vivien! No! You don't get to leave me! Fight for her! Fight for our daughter!"

I didn't have the strength to speak, but inside my mind, a sudden, fierce ancestral anger flared to life. The genetic sequence my mother had hidden inside me wasn't just a formula for fertility; it was a blueprint for absolute resilience. I refused to let my third child die in the dark.

I forced a deep, ragged breath into my lungs, my fingers tightening around Adrian’s wrist with a strength that surprised us both.

A final, sharp cry pierced the air—louder than the first two combined.

Dr. Evans let out a long, breathless laugh, lifting the third baby into the air. "Baby C is out. Another girl. And she’s a fighter."

The alarms slowly quieted as the medical team stabilized my vitals. My mother walked over to the side of my bed, carrying three small bundles wrapped in matching white linens. She placed them carefully across my chest, their tiny, warm bodies resting against my skin.

Adrian fell to his knees beside the table, his head dropping against my shoulder as a single, silent tear cut through the dried blood on his cheek. He looked at his three children—two girls and a boy—their tiny fingers already reaching out to touch one another, their hearts beating in a perfect, synchronized rhythm.

"We did it, Vivien," Adrian whispered, his voice rough with emotion. "The empire is theirs."
