Chapter 9 - The Weight of the Bloodline

The peace we found in Westchester was nothing more than an illusion, a brief breath of air before the deep plunge.

By my sixth month, the triplets were demanding everything my body had to give. My stomach was heavily swollen, a tight, round map of blue veins and stretched skin that made every step a calculated effort. The modern medical wing of the safehouse had become my entire world, filled with the steady beep of fetal monitors and the soft, white coats of doctors who moved around me like silent ghosts.

Adrian changed during those months. The cold, untouchable Don of Manhattan became a man obsessed with survival. He didn't sleep. I would wake up at three in the morning to find him sitting in the armchair by my bed, his storm-gray eyes fixed on my face, a heavy glass of bourbon untouched in his hand.

"You need to rest, Adrian," I whispered one night, my voice raspy from the dry winter air. "The guards are outside. The walls are twelve feet thick."

He stood up, walking slowly to the side of the bed. He didn't look at my face; his gaze went straight to my stomach, where three distinct movements were visible beneath the silk sheet. He dropped to one knee, placing his large, scarred hand flat against my skin.

"The walls don't matter, Vivien," he said, his voice dropping into a gravelly whisper. "The Holloway cartel was a single snake. But the poison my mother and yours tried to cure... it’s a global market. Marcus’s accounts showed wire transfers from Paris, Moscow, and Tokyo. The moment these children take their first breath, every syndicate in the world will know the Blackwood monopoly is unbreakable. They aren't waiting for a truce. They are waiting for a weakness."

"We aren't weak," I said, covering his hand with mine.

"You are carrying three heartbeats and your body is burning its own reserves to keep them alive," Adrian said, looking up at me, his eyes filled with a fierce, terrifying intensity. "If anything happens to you on that delivery table, Vivien... I will burn this city to the ground. I don't care about the empire. I don't care about the bloodline. I care about you."

It was the first time he had said it. Not as a protector, not as a mafia lord securing his future, but as a man who was utterly terrified of losing the woman he loved.

Before I could answer, my mother entered the room, her wheelchair rolling silently across the hardwood floor. Her health was returning, her eyes sharp and clear of the fog that had stolen her years.

"Adrian is right, Vivien," she said, looking between us. "The sequence I passed to you is a dominant strain, but the strain requires a massive amount of physical stamina during the final trimester. The babies are growing faster than a normal pregnancy. We have four weeks, at most, before your body forces a delivery."

She turned her gaze to Adrian. "And the international syndicates aren't going to wait for the hospital bills. They've already hired the Cercle Noir from Europe. The assassins are already in New York."
