Chapter 7 - The Westchester Stronghold

The safehouse in Westchester was a sprawling, colonial-style manor hidden behind twelve-foot stone walls and dense pine forests. It had its own underground medical facility, staffed by doctors who had signed lifelong non-disclosure agreements with the Blackwood family.

By three in the morning, my mother was resting comfortably in a clean hospital bed, an IV drip purifying her blood from the cocktail of neuro-blockers the Holloway cartel had used to control her.

Dr. Evans had just finished running a portable ultrasound machine over my stomach once more. The rhythmic, beautiful sound of the three heartbeats echoed through the quiet room, a stark contrast to the gunfire and explosions of the night.

"The infants are perfectly fine, Miss Carter," Dr. Evans said, offering a reassuring smile as he wiped the gel from my skin. "The amniotic levels are stable. You have a remarkably resilient constitution. Your mother's genetic work... it truly is a masterpiece."

"Thank you, Doctor," I whispered, pulling my sweater down.

When the medical staff left the room, Adrian stepped inside. He had been stitched up, a white bandage visible beneath his fresh black shirt, but the exhaustion on his face made him look human for the first time since I had met him.

He walked over to the side of my mother's bed, looking down at the woman who had spent decades running from his family.

"She's waking up," Adrian noted quietly.

I rushed to the side of the bed as my mother's eyelids fluttered open. This time, her eyes weren't vacant. The sharp, intelligent brown gaze that I had known my entire life focused slowly, first on the ceiling, then on me.

"Vivien..." she whispered, her voice weak but steady. "You... you didn't run."

"I couldn't run, Mom," I said, tears blurring my vision as I kissed her wrinkled hand. "I met Adrian. And... I'm pregnant. With triplets."

My mother let out a low, shaky breath, her gaze shifting slowly toward Adrian. She didn't look afraid; she looked tired, like a soldier who had reached the end of a long, exhausting campaign.

"Arthur's boy," she murmured, referencing Adrian's father. "You have his eyes. But I hope you don't have his blindness."

Adrian stepped closer, his posture respectful but firm. "My father didn't know his own inner circle was poisoning him, Clara. But I do. The Holloway cartel is broken after tonight. Don Holloway is dead, and his assets are being seized as we speak. But the ledger you left behind mentioned a deeper truth. Who poisoned my father?"

My mother reached up, her trembling fingers touching the edge of my sweater. "It wasn't an outside family, Adrian. The poison came from the inside. Your father's most trusted advisor... the man who raised you after the car bomb... the man who handles your global distribution."

Adrian's entire body went rigid. The air in the room suddenly felt dangerous again.

May you like

"Marcus," Adrian whispered, the name leaving his lips like a curse.
