Chapter 8 - The Sovereignty of the Three

The betrayal was a silent knife in the dark.

Marcus had been with the Blackwood family for thirty years. He had been the one to carry Adrian out of the smoke when his father's car exploded. He had been the one to track me down at the clinic. But he hadn't done it to protect the heirs; he had done it to ensure the Holloway cartel could capture me cleanly, taking a multi-billion dollar payout to hand the future of the Blackwood lineage over to the highest bidder.

But Marcus didn't know that my mother had awakened ahead of schedule. He didn't know that his entire network had just been exposed.

The sun was just beginning to rise over the pine forests of Westchester, casting long, golden shadows across the manor's grand library.

Adrian sat behind the massive mahogany desk, his hands resting flat on the polished wood. I stood beside him, my hand resting protectively over my stomach, my mother sitting in a wheelchair just behind us.

The heavy double doors opened, and Marcus walked in, carrying a fresh cup of coffee for Adrian, his expression as calm and professional as it had been for the last three decades.

"The perimeter is secure, Mr. Blackwood," Marcus said, placing the cup down. "We are ready to begin the relocation process to the offshore fortress whenever you are ready."

"Thank you, Marcus," Adrian said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "Tell me... when you stood in that clinic hallway yesterday, making sure the Holloway shooters didn't accidentally hit Vivien... how much did they promise you?"

Marcus froze. His hand stayed extended over the desk for a fraction of a second too long. The professional mask didn't slip, but his eyes grew incredibly dark.

"I don't know what you mean, Boss," Marcus said smoothly.

"My father loved you like a brother," Adrian continued, standing up slowly. He didn't draw his gun. He didn't need to. The room was already filled with ten silent, heavily armed guards who had shifted their loyalty to Adrian the moment the bank records had been verified ten minutes ago. "You poisoned his daily medication for two years to mimic a natural heart failure, and when he figured it out, you rigged the car to blow. You thought if the bloodline died out, the Commission would hand the empire to you. But then Vivien appeared."

Marcus let out a long, slow sigh. He dropped his hand, adjusting the cuffs of his suit coat with a strange, chilling nonchalance.

"Arthur was weak, Adrian," Marcus said, his voice turning cold and venomous. "He wanted to dissolve the syndicates. He wanted to take the billions we earned in the shadows and turn them into legitimate charities because he couldn't handle the guilt of his dead wife. I saved this empire from his morality. And yes... I was going to sell the girl to the highest bidder. With three heirs under my control, I would have ruled the entire eastern seaboard for the next fifty years."

"You forgot one thing, Marcus," I stepped forward, my voice ringing clear and absolute through the quiet library. "You thought I was just a broke waitress from Queens who could be handled like property. But I am my mother's daughter. And the children inside me aren't just heirs to a fortune... they are the beginning of a completely new world."

Adrian nodded slightly to the guards. "Take him to the lower levels. Ensure he receives the exact same treatment my father suffered before the end."

Marcus didn't scream as the guards seized his arms, dragging him out of the room. He just stared at Adrian with a hollow, dead look—the look of a man who had bet everything on a crown and lost it to a girl from the streets.

When the doors closed, the silence returned, but this time, the heavy weight of the past had finally been lifted.

Adrian turned to me, his storm-gray eyes softening into an expression of deep, unyielding devotion. He reached out, his warm palm gently resting over my hand on my stomach, where our three little miracles were resting safely.

"The war is over, Vivien," Adrian whispered, pressing his forehead against mine. "The empire is clean. From this day forward, everything we own, everything we build... it belongs to them."

I looked out the window at the rising sun, the golden light melting away the shadows of the long, bloody night. I wasn't running anymore. I wasn't afraid of the checking accounts, the rent, or the ghosts of the underworld.

I was Vivien Carter. And together with the gray-eyed wolf beside me, we were going to build a dynasty that no one could ever destroy.
