Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Threat

“What did you just say, Sofia?” Elias’s voice trembled, all his billionaire arrogance vanishing in a second.
Sofia shrank back into her hospital pillows, terrified by her father’s tone.
“Grandma said it,” the little girl whimpered, tears pooling in her eyes. “She told Uncle Rodrigo that Dr. Valeria’s baby is a curse. She said it should never be born.”
I froze, my hand instinctively wrapping around my seven-month-pregnant belly.
A cold sweat broke out on the back of my neck.
Elias stepped forward, his eyes darting between me and his daughter.
“Valeria, I swear to God, I didn’t know anything about this.”
“Step back, Elias,” I ordered, my voice dangerously low.
I wasn't the naive girl he had hidden in his apartment six months ago.
“You abandoned me because you ‘didn't know how to build a family’,” I sneered, checking Sofia’s IV line to mask my shaking hands. “But it seems your mother knows exactly how to destroy one.”
“I haven't spoken to my mother about you since the day you left!” he protested, stepping closer.
“Then how does she know I’m pregnant?” I shot back.
Silence slammed into the room.

Elias turned pale as the realization hit him.
If he hadn't told his family, someone had been watching me.
