Chapter 2 - Footsteps in the Shadows

The next morning, I walked through the busy corridors of San Gabriel Hospital.
I hadn’t slept.
Sofia’s words kept echoing in my mind, turning every shadow into a threat.
“Dr. Torres, you have a visitor in your office,” Nurse Elena said, handing me a stack of charts.
“Is it Mr. Robles again?” I sighed.
“No. It’s an older woman. Very well-dressed. Very demanding.”
My heart plummeted into my stomach.
I pushed the door to my office open.
Sitting in my chair, examining her manicured nails, was Leonor Robles.
Elias’s mother.
“I see you’ve done well for yourself, Valeria,” Leonor said without looking up.
“Get out of my office,” I said, leaving the door wide open.
Leonor finally looked at my belly, her lips curling into a cruel smile.
“How much?” she asked simply.
“Excuse me?”
“How much to make that little problem disappear? Five million? Ten?”
“My child is not for sale, and neither is my dignity,” I snapped, gripping the door handle.
“Dignity?” She laughed sharply. “You are a middle-class doctor who tried to trap a billionaire. My son left you because I told him to.”
“He left me because he was a coward,” I corrected her.
“He left because he received the photos of you and Dr. Mateo,” she purred.
I froze. Mateo was my mentor, completely strictly professional.
“What photos?” I whispered.

Before she could answer, a heavy hand slammed the door fully open.
It was Elias.
