Chapter 6 - Confessions Caught on Camera

Margaret recovered her composure quickly.

She let out a harsh, cruel laugh.

“So, you saw it. So what?”

Margaret pulled the hidden document out and placed it on top.

“It’s a waiver of your parental rights and a medical proxy.”

Evan looked at the floor, unable to meet Claire’s eyes.

“Evan has massive gambling debts, Claire,” Margaret confessed bluntly.

“Three million dollars. To very bad people.”

Claire feigned shock, though Sarah had already suspected financial ruin.

“Three million?” Claire gasped.

“Yes,” Harold chimed in, walking closer.

“And your life insurance policy pays out exactly four million.”

Claire stared at Evan.

“You wanted me to die yesterday?”

Evan finally looked up. His eyes were cold, stripped of the loving husband facade.

“It was the easiest way, Claire. You die in childbirth. Tragic, but natural.”

“I get the insurance. I pay off my debts. I raise the kid.”

“It’s nothing personal. It’s just business.”

Claire’s blood ran cold, but a fierce fire ignited in her chest.

He admitted it.

He admitted the entire plot.

And the black pen in her hand caught every single word, every facial expression.

“But you didn't die,” Margaret sighed, sounding genuinely annoyed.

“So now, you will sign this waiver and the property transfer.”

“If you don't, Harold will make sure you have a real 'accident' when you get home.”

Harold cracked his knuckles, smiling grimly.

It was a blatant, undeniable death threat.

Claire looked at the documents.

She looked at the pen in her hand.

She had everything she needed.

“Okay,” Claire whispered, pretending to be utterly defeated.

“I’ll sign.”

She put the pen to the paper.

But instead of writing her name, she wrote two letters in giant, bold ink across the legal document.

F. U.

She dropped the pen into her pocket.

Margaret looked at the paper.

Her face turned purple with rage.

“You stupid bitch!” Margaret screamed, raising her hand to strike Claire.

But before Margaret’s hand could fall, the hospital room door burst open.
