Chapter 7 - The Tables Turn

“Step away from my client!”

Sarah, the lawyer, stood in the doorway.

She wasn't alone.

Behind her stood two uniformed police officers and a stern-looking detective.

Margaret froze, her hand still raised in the air.

Harold immediately took a step backward toward the window.

Evan’s jaw dropped.

“What is the meaning of this?” Margaret demanded, trying to sound authoritative.

“We are having a private family discussion!”

Sarah walked into the room, her high heels clicking sharply against the tile.

She picked up the blue folder and the ruined document.

“A private discussion involving extortion, fraud, and threats of murder?” Sarah asked calmly.

She looked at Claire.

Claire pulled the black pen from her pocket.

She clicked it, ending the recording.

She handed it to the detective.

“I believe this contains everything you need, Detective,” Claire said.

Her voice no longer trembled. It was steel.

The detective took the pen and plugged it into a small tablet he carried.

The audio immediately played back, crisp and clear in the silent room.

“Your life insurance policy pays out exactly four million.”

“It was the easiest way, Claire. You die in childbirth.”

“Harold will make sure you have a real accident when you get home.”

Evan’s legs gave out.

He collapsed onto the small hospital visitor’s couch, burying his face in his hands.

“No, no, no,” he muttered.

Margaret backed away, her arrogance entirely gone.

“That’s illegal! You can’t record us without our permission!” she shrieked.

Sarah smirked.

“Actually, Margaret, in this state, only one-party consent is required.”

“And Claire gave her consent to record the conversation.”

The detective nodded to the uniformed officers.

“Arrest them all.”

Harold tried to make a run for the door.

He didn't make it two steps.

One of the officers grabbed him by the collar and slammed him against the wall.

The sound of metal handcuffs clicking shut echoed through the room.
