Chapter 8 - The Downfall

“Get your hands off me!” Margaret screamed as an officer cuffed her.
She kicked and thrashed like a wild animal.
Her perfectly styled hair fell into a messy tangle over her face.
“Evan! Do something!” she yelled at her son.
But Evan was already being handcuffed.
He looked up at Claire, his eyes wide with pathetic desperation.
“Claire, please. You know I love you. My mom made me do this!”
He threw his own mother under the bus to save himself.
Margaret gasped, staring at her son in pure betrayal.
“You ungrateful coward!” Margaret shrieked.
Claire sat up in her hospital bed, crossing her arms.
She looked at the family that had tried to destroy her.
“You don't love anyone, Evan. You just loved my money.”
Claire pointed a finger at him.
“I secured my trust this morning. You have zero access to my accounts.”
“The debt collectors are going to take your cars, your business, and everything you own.”
Evan began to sob loudly, a pathetic, high-pitched wail.
Harold was completely silent, glaring at the floor as he was dragged out.
The detective paused by Claire’s bed.
“We’ll need a formal statement later, Mrs. Davis.”
“But with this recording and the paper trail of his gambling debts...”
“They are looking at attempted murder, conspiracy, and extortion.”
“They won’t see the outside of a prison for a very long time.”
Claire nodded slowly.
“Thank you, Detective.”
As they dragged Evan through the door, he looked back one last time.
“I’m the father! You can’t take my kid away from me!”
Claire’s eyes were ice cold.
“You aren't a father. You're a monster.”
“And monsters don't get to hold my daughter.”
The door closed behind them.
The room was finally silent.
Sarah pulled up a chair and let out a long breath.
“Well,” Sarah smiled. “That went exactly as planned.”
Claire leaned back against her pillows.

A massive weight lifted off her chest.
The nightmare was over.
