Chapter 1 - The Whispering Metal

Ava’s fingers closed around the coin.

Suddenly, the metal felt warm. Alive.

Her heartbeat slowed. The hallway sharpened. Every sound became clear.

And for the first time, she heard something inside the coin whisper back. It was a low, rhythmic pulse, like a second heartbeat syncing with her own.

Holloway stepped away from her, his combat boots scraping against the polished floor.

“No…” he breathed, his eyes wide with genuine panic.

Ava looked up, her vision suddenly crisp, catching the microscopic beads of sweat forming on the General’s forehead.

“What did my father really bring home?” she asked, her voice dangerously calm.

The general’s voice broke. “You.”

He didn't wait for her to process it. He slammed his hand against the red emergency panel on the wall.

Klaxons wailed instantly. The heavy steel doors at the end of the corridor began to slide shut.

“Guards! Restrain her! Do not let her leave this sector!” Holloway shouted, retreating behind a descending blast shield.

Ava didn't think. She reacted.

Her body moved with a fluidity and speed that terrified her. She vaulted over a supply cart, her legs carrying her toward the closing doors faster than any human should be able to sprint.

“Stop right there!” a guard yelled, raising his rifle.

Ava didn’t stop. She ducked under the rifle barrel, grabbed the guard’s tactical vest, and threw him aside. He flew backward with unnatural force, crashing into the wall.

She slid through the narrowing gap of the blast doors just as they locked together with a deafening clang.

She was out in the night air, running toward the perimeter fence. The coin in her hand was no longer just warm. It was vibrating.
