Chapter 3 - Behind Bars and Betrayals

The stark contrast between the lavish Sterling estate and the cold, damp concrete of the city holding cell was jarring. Elena sat on the hard metal bench, the deep red of her sequined gown now looking absurd and tragic against the grim surroundings. The scratch on her cheek throbbed, a painful reminder of the violent trap she had walked into. For forty-eight hours, she was denied a phone call. The Sterlings' influence ran deep in the city, reaching even the precinct captains. Outside these walls, Julian’s PR machine was already spinning a masterclass in character assassination. They painted Elena as an unstable, violent gold-digger who had suffered a psychotic break and viciously attacked her loving husband without provocation.

Just as despair began to settle in her chest, the heavy steel door of the visitation room clanked open. In walked a man in a sharply tailored navy suit, carrying a battered leather briefcase. His name was Marcus Reed. Marcus was a former prosecutor turned high-profile defense attorney, known for his ruthless tactics in the courtroom and his deep-seated disdain for corrupt billionaires. "Mrs. Sterling," he said, taking a seat across from her. "You look like you've had a rough night. I'm Marcus. A friend of a friend heard what Julian is trying to pull, and let’s just say, I don't like bullies." Elena looked at him, her eyes guarded but desperate. "They're going to bury me, Mr. Reed. Julian has the judge, the police, and the media in his pocket. He wants me in prison so he doesn't have to split his assets in the divorce."

Marcus pulled out a notepad, his expression unreadable but intense. "They have ten witnesses claiming you attacked him out of nowhere. They have photos of his 'burns,' and they have Margaret crying on national television. It's a solid case for aggravated assault." Elena leaned forward, the chains of her handcuffs clinking against the table. "They have lies," she whispered fiercely. "And I have the truth." She took a deep breath, trusting this stranger with her only lifeline. "Mr. Reed... there’s something they don't know. Before the dinner started, I planted a hidden camera on the hallway shelf. It captures the dining room and the kitchen. It saw who struck first." Marcus's eyes widened slightly, a predatory smile slowly forming on his lips. "Well then, Elena," he murmured, "let's go hunting."
