Chapter 8 - Turning the Tide

When Marcus finally stood up for cross-examination, the atmosphere in the room shifted. He didn't yell; he didn't badger. He was surgical. He called Chloe back to the stand. "Ms. Sterling, you claim Elena attacked your brother unprovoked. Where were you standing when this occurred?" he asked, pacing slowly. Chloe recited her rehearsed lines flawlessly. Marcus then pulled out a blown-up photograph of the dining room. "Interesting. Because based on the seating chart and the angle you just described, you would have been facing a large mirrored wall. A mirror that reflects the exact spot where Julian was standing." He handed her a document. "Are you aware of the penalty for perjury, Ms. Sterling?" Chloe visibly paled, glancing frantically at Julian.

Marcus then pivoted abruptly, introducing a massive stack of financial documents into evidence over the DA's frantic objections. The judge, intrigued, allowed it to show motive. "Ms. Sterling, isn't it true that you and your brother are currently under investigation by the SEC for embezzling over forty million dollars into offshore accounts? And isn't it true that you needed a scapegoat?" The courtroom erupted in gasps. The DA shouted, "Objection! Relevance!" The judge banged his gavel, demanding order. Marcus smiled coldly. "The defense will show that the 'unprovoked attack' was a premeditated setup to discredit my client before framing her for massive corporate fraud."

When Julian took the stand, he tried to regain control, using his natural charisma to charm the jury. He spoke softly, touching his chest where the 'burns' supposedly were. "I just wanted my wife to be happy. I don't know why she snapped." Marcus walked right up to the podium, staring Julian down. "Mr. Sterling, you claim you never touched your wife that night. You claim you are a gentle, loving husband who was suddenly assaulted. Is that your final, sworn testimony?" Julian puffed out his chest, looking Marcus dead in the eye. "Yes. I never laid a finger on her until she attacked me." Marcus nodded slowly, turning his back to Julian and looking directly at the jury. "No further questions for this witness, Your Honor. The defense would like to introduce Exhibit A: the truth."
