Chapter 2 - The Fall

The music seemed to fade into a dull hum as Eleanor stopped inches from Claire. The older woman’s smile was sharp enough to draw blood. "Claire, darling," Eleanor purred, though her eyes were filled with venom. "I must say, I am shocked to see you. I thought we had an understanding." "The understanding was based on a lie, Eleanor," Claire said, her voice steadying. She refused to back down. "I know about the Cayman accounts. I know about the falsified medical records from the night my father died."

Eleanor’s smile vanished. For a split second, genuine panic flashed across her perfectly manicured face. She grabbed Claire’s arm, her perfectly filed nails digging painfully into Claire’s skin. "Walk with me," Eleanor hissed. "Now." She practically dragged Claire toward the heavy oak doors that led out to the grand marble balcony overlooking the cliffside gardens. Ethan tried to follow, but two large security guards—men loyal only to Eleanor—stepped smoothly into his path, blocking his way.

Out on the balcony, the night air was freezing, whipping Claire’s hair across her face. The sound of crashing waves on the rocks a hundred feet below filled the silence between them. "You stupid, ungrateful little girl," Eleanor spat, dropping all pretense of civility. "You think a piece of paper is going to save you? I built this empire. Your father was weak, and you are just like him." "He wasn't weak! He was a good man, and you murdered him!" Claire shouted, pulling the document from her clutch. "This goes to the press tomorrow. You're finished."

Eleanor lunged. It wasn't a calculated move; it was an act of pure, desperate rage. She grabbed the document, but Claire held on tight. The two women struggled near the ornate stone balustrade. Eleanor: "You should never have come back here." Claire: "Let go of me!" The struggle was brief but violent. Eleanor shoved with all her might. Claire lost her footing on the slick marble. Her hands scrambled for a hold, catching only empty air as she tumbled backward over the low railing.

Guest: "Oh my god, she pushed her!" A woman in a sequined dress had stepped out onto the balcony just in time to see Claire go over the edge. Maid: "Someone help her, please!" A maid carrying a tray of glasses screamed in horror, the crystal shattering on the floor. Claire hit the lower terrace with a sickening thud, ten feet below the main balcony, her body coming to a violent stop against the hard stone. Ethan burst through the doors, shoving the guards aside. He saw the empty space where Claire had been standing and the horrified look on Eleanor's face. Ethan: "Hold on, I'm coming!" He vaulted over the small side stairs, rushing down to the lower terrace. Claire was lying on her side, gasping for air, a pool of dark blood beginning to form beneath her head. Claire: "Ethan..." Ethan slid to his knees, his hands hovering over her, afraid to make it worse, before gently cradling her head. Ethan: "I've got you. I've got you." Claire's eyes were losing focus. Every breath sounded wet and agonizing. Claire: "I can't breathe..." Ethan: "Look at me. Stay with me." He turned back toward the chaotic balcony above, his voice roaring with primal fury. Ethan: "Call the police!" As sirens began to wail in the distance, Eleanor stared down at her hands, trembling. But the truth is even more shocking. The document wasn't just a will. It contained a secret that would shatter the Sterling legacy forever.
