Chapter 6 - The Trap

The plan took three weeks to orchestrate. During that time, the world believed Claire was either dead or permanently comatose. Ethan bribed the hospital staff to keep her recovery a strict secret. To the public, Ethan played the part of the grieving, defeated friend. Meanwhile, Eleanor was riding high. She was preparing for the biggest moment of her life: the final acquisition that would merge the Sterling Foundation with a global conglomerate, making her officially a billionaire and untouchable. The signing ceremony was to be held at the Sterling corporate headquarters, broadcast live to financial networks across the country.

Working from a secure safehouse, Claire and Ethan systematically dismantled Eleanor's defenses. They traced the offshore accounts Arthur had mentioned in the document. With Ethan's insider knowledge of the company's server architecture and Claire's unyielding determination, they found the missing financial logs. Eleanor had been embezzling millions from the charity arm of the foundation to fund bribes for politicians and judges. It was a house of cards built on corruption. But financial ruin wasn't enough. Claire needed a confession.

They needed the woman who saw everything on the balcony. The guest in the sequined dress. Her name was Victoria Vance, a socialite who had been blackmailed by Eleanor in the past. Ethan cornered Victoria in a private club. He didn't use threats; he used logic. "Eleanor throws away everyone when she's done with them," Ethan told Victoria. "You're a liability to her because you saw the push. How long until you have an 'accident' too?" Victoria was terrified, but she knew Ethan was right. She agreed to wear a wire and confront Eleanor, pretending she wanted a bigger payoff to keep her silence.

The audio recording was the final nail in the coffin. On the tape, Eleanor arrogantly laughed at Victoria's threats. "I pushed that miserable little orphan off the balcony, and the police thanked me for my cooperation," Eleanor’s voice sneered through the speakers. "You think anyone will believe you? I am Eleanor Sterling. I am a god in this city." Claire listened to the tape, her face devoid of emotion. "It's time," Claire said, standing up. She was fully healed, dressed in a sharp, tailored black suit. She looked like a CEO. She looked like her father, Arthur. "Let's go take back our company."
