Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The boardroom on the 50th floor was packed with international investors, board members, and journalists. Eleanor sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, a pen poised over the merger contract. She wore a triumphant smile, soaking in the flash of cameras. "This merger represents a new era for the Sterling Foundation," Eleanor announced smoothly. "An era of unparalleled growth and integrity." She lowered her pen to sign.

"Stop!" The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding crash. Every head in the room turned. Eleanor’s pen slipped, leaving an ugly black streak across the document. Her face drained of all color, turning an ashen, sickly gray. Walking into the room, flanked by Ethan and two federal agents, was Claire. "Claire...?" Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking. "That's impossible. You're... you're on life support." "Surprise, Eleanor. I'm a fast healer," Claire said coldly, striding directly toward the head of the table.

The room erupted into chaos. Journalists began snapping photos frantically. "What is the meaning of this?" a board member demanded. Ethan stepped forward, plugging a flash drive into the main presentation console. "The meaning," Ethan announced loudly, "is that this merger is fraudulent. The current CEO, Eleanor Sterling, is under arrest for embezzlement, bribery, and attempted murder." Before Eleanor could shout for security, the giant screen behind her lit up. Financial records, offshore bank statements, and forged documents flashed across the screen for every investor to see. Then, the audio recording played. Eleanor’s own voice echoed through the boardroom: "I pushed that miserable little orphan off the balcony..."

Investors gasped. Several board members stood up, backing away from Eleanor as if she were radioactive. "It's a deepfake! It's a lie!" Eleanor shrieked, panic finally breaking through her icy exterior. "Arrest them! Security!" But the security guards didn't move. The federal agents stepped forward, pulling handcuffs from their belts. "Eleanor Sterling, you are under arrest," the lead agent said, grabbing her arm. As the cold steel snapped around her wrists, Eleanor locked eyes with Claire, her face twisted in pure hatred. "You think you've won?" Eleanor spat. "You're nothing! You're just a stray dog Arthur picked up to spite me! You have no blood right to this company!"

Claire walked up to her, stopping just inches away. She reached into her jacket and pulled out a single sheet of paper—the DNA results. "You're right about one thing, Eleanor," Claire said, her voice dropping to a low, deadly whisper that only Eleanor and Ethan could hear. "Arthur wasn't my real father." She unfolded the paper and held it up so Eleanor could read the names. Eleanor's eyes scanned the document. Mother: Eleanor Vance. Daughter: Claire. Probability of maternity: 99.9%.

Eleanor stopped breathing. Her eyes widened to comical proportions, darting from the paper to Claire's face, searching for the lie. But she found only the cold, hard truth. "You..." Eleanor choked out, her legs giving way. If the agents hadn't been holding her, she would have collapsed. "My baby... my baby died..." "No," Claire said, her voice devoid of any pity. "You threw your baby away in a slum. Arthur found me. He saved me from the monster you are. You didn't just kill your husband, Eleanor. You tried to murder your own daughter." Eleanor let out a sound that wasn't human—a guttural, agonizing wail of absolute despair. The realization of what she had done, of what she had destroyed, shattered her mind completely. She was dragged out of the boardroom sobbing, a broken, hollow shell of a woman.
