Chapter 5 - Awakening

Three days passed. Seventy-two hours of living hell. The media circus outside the hospital had died down, replaced by a steady stream of lawyers sent by Eleanor, demanding access to Claire’s medical records. Ethan had used his own legal authority to block them at every turn. He barely slept, living off bad hospital coffee and adrenaline.

On the fourth morning, a subtle change occurred. The steady, monotonous beep of the heart monitor shifted its rhythm. Ethan, asleep in the uncomfortable chair, jolted awake. Claire’s fingers twitched. He leaped up, pressing the call button frantically. "Nurse! Get the doctor!" When he looked back down, Claire’s eyes were fluttering open. They were clouded with pain and confusion, squinting against the harsh hospital lights. "Ethan...?" Her voice was a dry, raspy whisper. "I'm here. I'm right here," Ethan said, grasping her hand, a massive wave of relief crashing over him.

The medical team rushed in, checking her vitals, shining lights into her eyes. After an agonizing hour of tests, the doctor finally smiled. "She's out of the woods. It's a miracle, frankly. But she needs rest." When they were finally alone again, Claire looked at Ethan, her memory slowly piecing itself together. "The gala..." she whispered. "Eleanor... she pushed me." "I know," Ethan said softly. "The police think it was an accident. Eleanor paid off the witnesses." Claire closed her eyes in defeat. "Then she won. She got the document. My father's letter..."

"No, she didn't," Ethan said. He pulled the blood-stained document from his jacket and held it up. Claire gasped. "You read it?" Ethan nodded, his expression turning solemn. "Claire, I know the truth. I know who she really is to you." Tears pooled in Claire's eyes. "I found out a month ago. The investigator I hired uncovered the adoption records. Arthur... my dad... he saved me from her. And she killed him for it." "She doesn't know, Claire. Eleanor doesn't know you are her biological daughter. I've read the confession. Arthur never told her. He was waiting for the right moment, and she poisoned him before he could."

Claire stared at the ceiling, a hardened resolve replacing her tears. The woman who gave birth to her was a monster who had robbed her of the only real father she ever had, and then tried to end her life. "Ethan," Claire said, her voice finding a sudden, chilling strength. "I don't want just justice. I don't want her just in jail." "What do you want?" Ethan asked, leaning in. "I want her to lose everything. Her money, her status, her empire. I want to break her in front of the whole world. And then... I want her to know exactly who she broke."
