Chapter 4 - The Hidden Truth

The document was not just a revised will left by Arthur Sterling. It was a DNA report, legally certified, accompanied by a sworn confession from Arthur himself, written just weeks before his death. Ethan read the words over and over, his mind struggling to process the magnitude of the lie they had all been living.

Eleanor was not just Arthur’s second wife. Before she married Arthur, she had been a young, ambitious secretary in his rival's firm. But that wasn't the secret. The secret was about Eleanor’s own daughter, a child she claimed had died in infancy before she met Arthur. The document revealed that the child hadn't died. Eleanor had given the child up in a back-alley deal to protect her own reputation and climb the social ladder. And Arthur had found out. He had spent his vast resources tracking down the child Eleanor had abandoned. Arthur had planned to divorce Eleanor, leave her with absolutely nothing, and adopt the abandoned girl to give her the life Eleanor had stolen from her. But the most shocking part was the identity of that child.

It was Claire.

Arthur Sterling wasn't Claire's biological father. Eleanor was Claire's biological mother. Arthur had adopted Claire as a baby, hiding the truth from both Eleanor and Claire to protect the child from Eleanor's monstrous narcissism. He had raised Claire as his own, showering her with love, while Eleanor treated her stepdaughter with nothing but bitter resentment, never realizing she was looking at her own flesh and blood. Eleanor had just tried to murder her own daughter.

Ethan felt violently sick. The sheer cruelty, the twisted irony of it all, was too much to bear. Eleanor hated Claire because Claire represented Arthur's first marriage—or so she thought. If Eleanor knew the truth, she would realize she had destroyed the only real family she had left. Or worse... maybe Eleanor did know. Maybe she found out right before Arthur died, and that’s why she killed him. And that's why she had to kill Claire.

Ethan folded the paper and put it back in his pocket. His sadness evaporated, replaced by a cold, calculating rage. Eleanor Sterling had built a fortress of lies, wealth, and intimidation. But every fortress has a weak point. Ethan was a corporate lawyer; he knew the Sterling Foundation's structure inside and out. He pulled out his phone and made a call to a private investigator he trusted with his life. "Marcus, it's Ethan. I need a secure line. We are going to war."
