Chapter 12 - The Intruders in the Moonlight

The sun dipped below the horizon, plunging Cassian’s cliffside estate into a shroud of heavy, wind-whipped darkness.

Inside the subterranean security control room, monitor screens flickered with static as encrypted jamming signals disrupted the exterior cameras.

Cassian stood before the tactical display, his eyes narrowing as he assessed the perimeter breach.

“They are using military-grade signal dampeners,” Cassian muttered, his mind calculating every possible entry vector.

“They want to blind us before they strike.”

Elena stood beside him, her fingers resting lightly on the edge of the metal console.

“They aren't looking to negotiate, are they?” she asked, her voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through her veins.

“Vance doesn't negotiate; he eliminates loose ends,” Cassian replied, turning to look at her with fierce intensity.

“I need you to stay in the secure panic suite while my men sweep the lower levels.”

“I’m not hiding, Cassian,” Elena said, her chin lifting with stubborn resolve.

“This is my father’s legacy they are trying to steal back, and I am not going to cower in a room while you fight my battles.”

Before Cassian could argue, the heavy steel doors of the main foyer echoed with a deafening, concussive thud.

Someone had planted an explosive charge against the outer security locks.

Alarms wailed through the corridors, bathing the white marble interior in a flashing red emergency light.

“Stay behind me,” Cassian ordered, drawing a sleek, silenced firearm from his shoulder holster with fluid precision.

They moved silently down the dimly lit hallway toward the grand library where the original Arthur Marlow manuscripts were securely locked inside a biometric safe.

The heavy oak doors of the library splintered inward as three masked mercenaries in tactical gear burst into the room.

Cassian fired instantly, neutralizing the lead intruder before he could raise his weapon.

The remaining two mercenaries scrambled for cover behind the mahogany bookshelves, returning blind fire into the shadows.

Elena dropped low to the floor, her eyes scanning the chaotic room.

She noticed the heavy brass floor lamp near the corner and the acoustic resonance of the hollow wooden floorboards beneath her knees.

Remembering the structural layout of the estate from her father’s blueprints, she realized the intruders were standing directly above the main electrical junction box.

Without hesitation, Elena lunged forward, grabbed the heavy iron fire poker from the hearth, and slammed it down against the floor lever connecting the sub-basement grid.

A blinding flash of electrical sparks exploded from the wall sockets, plunging the library into total darkness.

The mercenaries cursed in confusion, their night-vision goggles flaring uselessly from the sudden power surge.

In that fraction of a second, Cassian moved through the dark with lethal efficiency, subduing both attackers in swift, silent succession.

The heavy silence of the night rushed back into the room, broken only by the sound of heavy breathing.

Cassian holstered his weapon and turned instantly toward Elena, his hands gripping her shoulders.

“Are you hurt?” he demanded, his voice laced with rare panic.

“I’m completely fine,” Elena answered, a fierce, adrenalized smile touching her lips.

“It seems my father taught me more than just how to play the piano.”

Cassian let out a low breath of relief, pulling her tightly against his chest.

“Vance just made the biggest mistake of his life,” Cassian whispered into her hair.

“Now, we end this permanently.”
