Chapter 14 - Checkmate at the Gala

The grand ballroom of the Bellgrave Theater glittered under thousands of crystal lights as the elite of the global arts and financial worlds gathered for the annual charity gala.

Security was unprecedented; federal agents in tuxedoes mingled with Cassian’s elite private operatives stationed at every exit.

Elena stood backstage in the private greenroom, wearing a breathtaking gown of midnight-blue silk embroidered with silver threads that caught the light like stardust.

The heavy oak door opened quietly, and Cassian stepped inside, his expression calm, collected, and dangerously focused.

“The federal teams are in position around the perimeter,” Cassian reported softly, walking over to adjust her collar.

“Vance just arrived through the VIP underground entrance.”

“Let him in,” Elena whispered, taking a deep, steadying breath.

“It’s time to play the final movement.”

Out in the glittering ballroom, Viktor Vance walked with an air of arrogant invincibility, dressed in an immaculate bespoke tuxedo.

He believed his financial leverage and hidden threats would force the foundation board to hand over Arthur Marlow’s original manuscripts before the night ended.

He spotted Cassian and Elena walking gracefully down the grand marble staircase toward the center of the floor.

Vance smiled coldly, raising a glass of champagne as they approached.

“Mr. Voss, Ms. Marlow,” Vance greeted smoothly, his voice dripping with false civility.

“A magnificent restoration, truly.”

“It’s a shame it will all be tied up in corporate litigation by tomorrow morning.”

Cassian didn't even break his stride, stopping just inches away from Vance with an expression of icy disdain.

“Litigation is for men who have legal ground to stand on, Viktor,” Cassian replied smoothly.

“You stepped onto American soil with an active Interpol red notice attached to your name.”

Vance’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting toward the exits.

“You’re bluffing,” Vance hissed, his hand reaching inside his jacket toward a hidden communication device.

“I don't bluff,” Cassian stated quietly.

Suddenly, every television screen mounted along the ballroom walls flickered off their classical slideshows and instantly switched to live feeds of federal agents raiding Vance’s Geneva bank vaults and local safe houses.

A collective gasp swept through the assembled elites as audio recordings of Vance orchestrating the original theft of Arthur Marlow’s scores began playing loudly over the sound system.

Vance’s face drained of all color, his body trembling with sudden, unadulterated panic.

“Arrest him,” Cassian commanded softly.

Before Vance could draw a weapon, four federal marshals materialized from the crowd, slamming him against a marble pillar and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

“You can't do this! I am a sovereign citizen!” Vance screamed as he was dragged toward the service exit.

Elena watched him go, feeling the last cold ghost of her past evaporate into nothingness.

The entire ballroom erupted into a roaring, thunderous standing ovation for the woman who had brought down an international syndicate.
