Chapter 14 - The Queen of the Boardroom

The silence that settled over the 50th floor was no longer heavy with tension; it was thick with the weight of absolute power.
Isabella leaned back in the high leather chair, letting out a long, shuddering breath that she had been holding for nineteen years.
The adrenaline was finally beginning to recede, leaving a profound, aching stillness in its wake.
Damian walked around the table and pulled out the chair directly beside her.
He sat down, resting his elbows on the polished wood.
“You handled them like you were born in this room,” Damian said, a genuine trace of warmth softening the harsh lines of his jaw.
Isabella looked down at the gold fountain pen in her hand.
“I spent my whole life surviving in the dark, Damian.”
“Turns out, the dark prepares you well for monsters in expensive suits.”
Marcus stood near the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the panoramic skyline of the city.
“The federal prosecutor called downstairs, boss.”
“Charles’s accounts are frozen, and his estate assets are under state seizure.”
“The board has unanimously ratified Isabella as the primary managing trustee of Moretti Maritime.”
“The empire is secure.”
Isabella stood up from the chair and walked toward the glass wall.
Far below, tiny cars moved along the wet asphalt like ants crawling across a map.
This city had tried to crush her mother.
It had tried to bury her in a nameless grave.
It had left her to starve in cold foster wards with nothing but a tarnished silver locket and a fading memory.
Now, she owned the sky above it.
“What happens now?”
Isabella asked quietly, her breath fogging slightly against the cold glass.
Damian walked up behind her, stopping just an inch away.
“Now, we rebuild everything Charles corrupted.”
“We honor the people your mother tried to protect.”
“And we make sure that no child ever has to run from the shadows of this family again.”
Isabella turned around to face him.
For the first time since they collided in the ballroom last night, the armor of grief and fury fell away, leaving two people who had both lost too much to the cruelty of the world.
She reached up and touched the warm stubble along his jaw.
Damian leaned into her palm, closing his eyes for a single heartbeat.
“Thank you for not letting me stay dead,” she whispered.
Damian opened his eyes, dark and fierce with an unshakable vow.

“You were never dead, Isabella.”
“You were just waiting for the fire to clear.”
