Chapter 10 - The Boardroom Ambush

The headquarters of Moretti Maritime Holdings occupied the top three floors of the Moretti Tower downtown.

The 50th-floor boardroom was encased in floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the financial district.

A massive thirty-foot conference table made of polished Brazilian rosewood dominated the center.

Twelve senior board members, representing the oldest corporate interests in the state, sat around the perimeter.

At the head of the table sat Charles Moretti.

He looked refreshed, wearing a bespoke silver-grey suit with a silk pocket square.

His posture was triumphant, radiating the relaxed confidence of a man whose last loose thread had been eliminated.

Beside him sat Julian Moretti, Damian’s cousin, fidgeting with a gold Montblanc pen.

Vanessa Cole was seated in the guest gallery near the doors, wearing a lavender Chanel suit.

Her eyes were fixed on the heavy mahogany double doors at the far end of the room.

"It is nine-oh-two," Charles announced, tapping his signet ring against the rosewood table.

"Damian is absent."

"As chief trustee of the Moretti Family Foundation, I call this extraordinary session to order."

Julian cleared his throat nervously.

"Should we wait five more minutes, Uncle Charles?"

"Damian rarely misses an executive vote."

Charles smiled with benevolent condescension.

"Damian is undergoing a personal crisis, Julian."

"Last night, he suffered an unfortunate public episode at the estate."

"He has become erratic, obsessed with old family tragedies that have no place in a multibillion-dollar merger."

"For the protection of the firm and our investors, we must proceed without him."

Charles signaled to the corporate attorney standing near the projection screen.

"Mr. Vance, distribute the voting ballots for the Cole Logistics acquisition."

"Under Clause 8 of the charter, my proxy vote is sufficient to execute the transfer."

The corporate attorney took a step forward, holding a stack of legal agreements.

Then the heavy oak double doors of the boardroom swung open with concussive force.

The loud thud echoed against the glass walls, freezing every hand in the room.

Two private security guards in charcoal suits stepped through the entrance and flanked the doorway.

Then Damian Moretti walked in.

He moved with absolute, predatory confidence, his dark coat unbuttoned, his gaze sweeping the room.

Charles frowned, his triumphant smile faltering for a fraction of a second.

"Damian, you are late."

"We were about to execute the Cole merger under trustee authority."

Damian did not sit down.

He walked to the head of the table and stopped two feet from Charles’s chair.

"You won't be signing anything today, Charles."

Charles let out a short, patronizing laugh that sounded slightly brittle.

"You don't hold the majority voting stock alone, Damian."

"Julian and I control fifty-two percent of the foundation trust until you ratify the new board structure."

"You are outvoted."

Damian leaned both hands onto the rosewood surface, towering over the older man.

"I am not here as the majority owner, Charles."

"I am here as the executor of my father’s true estate."

Damian turned toward the open doorway.

"Enter, Miss Moretti."

Every head in the room snapped toward the double doors.

Isabella stepped across the threshold.

The silence that fell upon the room was absolute, suffocating, and terrifying.

She wore the midnight-blue silk suit like armor.

Her head was held high, her posture immaculate, her dark eyes sweeping the frozen executives.

Around her neck, the two silver phoenix pendants caught the bright morning light through the glass.

Vanessa Cole let out a soft, involuntary gasp from the guest gallery, her hand flying to her mouth.

Julian Moretti dropped his gold pen; it rolled across the rosewood table and fell to the carpet.

Charles Moretti stood up so violently that his heavy leather armchair screeched against the floor.

The color drained from his face until his skin looked like parchment paper.

His pupils were dilated with sheer, unadulterated terror.

"You..."

Charles’s voice cracked into a hoarse, ragged whisper.

"You are dead."

Isabella walked down the length of the conference table, her heels clicking with steady, deliberate authority.

She stopped at the opposite end of the rosewood table and looked directly into the face of the man who had tried to murder her twice.

"Isabella Rossi died nineteen years ago on Route 9, Mr. Moretti."

Her voice was clear, resonant, and entirely without fear.

"My name is Isabella Moretti."

"And I have returned to take my father’s seat."CHAPTER 11 — The Verdict of the Bloodline

Charles Moretti stepped back against the rosewood conference table as if he had been struck across the face with an iron bar.

His breath came in short, jagged gasps that echoed through the glass-walled boardroom.

“This is a grotesque fabrication.”

Charles pointed a trembling finger toward Isabella, his voice cracking with rising panic.

“That girl is a hired extra plucked from some downtown agency by Damian to execute a hostile coup.”

“She is not Maria Rossi.”

“She is not Vincent’s daughter.”

Julian Moretti looked between his uncle and the young woman standing at the end of the table, his face turning the color of ash.

“Uncle Charles, her face...”

“Look at her face.”

“She has Vincent’s eyes down to the exact shape.”

“Silence, Julian!”

Charles barked the command with a desperation that stripped away his decades of cultivated dignity.

“Security!”

“Remove this impostor from the building immediately!”

Neither of the two security guards flanking the doorway moved an inch.

They stood at rigid attention, their eyes fixed straight ahead under Damian’s direct authority.

Damian walked slowly around the edge of the table, his footsteps heavy against the carpet.

“The security detail answers to the primary holder of the Moretti trust, Charles.”

“And as of this morning, that authority no longer belongs to you.”

Damian reached inside his coat and pulled out the leather-bound portfolio wrapped in oilcloth.

He placed it deliberately on the mahogany surface before the stunned board members.

“This is the original last will and testament of Vincent Moretti, signed twenty years ago and witnessed by federal judges.”

“It outlines that sixty percent of Moretti Maritime belongs exclusively to Maria Rossi and her legitimate daughter, Isabella.”

Charles slammed both hands down onto the wooden table, his face mottled with purple rage.

“That document is null and void!”

“Maria Rossi was a criminal who died in a fiery wreck on Route 9 nineteen years ago!”

“The state coroner certified the remains!”

“The state coroner signed whatever document you placed in front of him, Charles.”

A cold, smooth voice cut through the commotion from the doorway.

Dr. Vance walked into the boardroom, carrying a secured leather briefcase.

He was accompanied by two uniformed officers of the state surrogate court.

Dr. Vance placed his briefcase on the edge of the table and opened the brass latches.

“I am Dr. Marcus Vance, chief forensic pathologist for the state registry.”

“Nineteen years ago, I was pressured by executive proxies to expedite the identification of the Route 9 vehicle fire.”

“At the time, I accepted the dental charts provided by the family adviser.”

“However, genetic material preserved from the original scene, cross-referenced with modern national databases last night, confirms a ninety-nine point nine eight percent maternal match.”

Dr. Vance pulled out a crisp, notarized legal certification and laid it before the senior board members.

“The person known as Isabella Rossi is, without question, the biological daughter of Vincent Moretti and Maria Rossi.”

Vanessa Cole stood up abruptly from the guest gallery, her lavender jacket rustling violently.

“This ruins everything!”

“The merger agreement between Cole Logistics and Moretti Holdings was contingent on clean family ownership!”

“This is a circus!”

Isabella turned her head slowly to look at Vanessa.

Her expression was calm, cold, and utterly devastating.

“The circus ended the moment you spilled champagne on my uniform, Miss Cole.”

“Now, sit down and be quiet while the adults conduct business.”

Vanessa’s mouth dropped open in speechless outrage, but she sank back into her chair under the crushing weight of the room’s sudden silence.
