Chapter 7 - The Secret Vault of Pier 44

At two in the morning, the rain turned into a freezing coastal mist.

Damian Moretti stepped out of his black armored car onto the wet concrete of Pier 44.

The harbor smelled of salt water, diesel exhaust, and rotting timber.

Rows of rusted shipping containers were stacked three high against the stormy sky.

This pier was the private property of Moretti Maritime Holdings.

No city patrol car ever entered this perimeter without prior clearance from Damian’s office.

Marcus stood by the heavy steel door of a corrugated blue container, his raincoat dripping wet.

"Is he awake?"

Damian asked, his voice low and sharp.

"He didn't want to talk for the first hour," Marcus replied, wiping rainwater from his brow.

"Then I showed him the security camera footage from the tenement stairwell."

"He realized we already had his vehicle registration and his mother's address in South Boston."

"He gave up the phone, the digital drop, and the deposit slip."

Damian pushed open the heavy steel door of the container.

Inside, a single halogen work light hung from an exposed crossbeam.

The hitman from Isabella’s apartment was seated on an aluminum folding chair.

His tactical vest had been removed, leaving only a torn grey thermal undershirt.

His left shoulder was heavily bandaged, though fresh blood seeped through the white gauze.

His hands were zip-tied behind his back with industrial plastic restraints.

When Damian stepped into the light, the prisoner did not look up.

"Look at me," Damian ordered.

The man raised his bruised face.

His jaw was swollen, and one eye was completely shut from Marcus's interrogation.

"I didn't know who she was," the man rasped, his voice raw from screaming.

"The contract was listed on an encrypted broker channel as an unhoused Jane Doe."

"Ten thousand advance, forty thousand upon confirmation of clean disposal."

Damian walked slowly around the perimeter of the chair.

"Who transferred the initial ten thousand?"

"A shell company out of the Cayman Islands."

"Called Silverline Holdings."

Damian’s eyes darkened.

Silverline Holdings was the private offshore account Charles Moretti used to fund his horse racing bets.

"And what were your exact instructions regarding the documents?"

The hitman swallowed hard, coughing against the cold air.

"Burn everything in the tin box."

"The birth certificate, the baby scrap, any photographs."

"Leave the body on the floor with three empty baggies of fentanyl and a used needle."

"Make it look like an accidental overdose of a runaway foster kid."

Damian stopped directly in front of the kneeling man.

"Charles wanted her dead before seven o'clock tomorrow morning."

"Because at nine o'clock, the family trust council meets to sign the merger documents with the Cole syndicate."

"Once that merger is ratified, the board locks the ownership shares for ten years."

"Even if Maria Rossi herself rose from the grave, she couldn't overturn the signature."

Damian reached out and pulled the man's encrypted burner phone from Marcus’s hand.

The screen was unlocked, showing a series of messages received at one-thirty in the morning.

SENDER: UNKNOWN.

STATUS: IS THE LEAK PLUGGED?

REPLY REQUIRED BEFORE 06:00.

Damian stared at the glowing blue screen.

He typed a single response with his thumb:

DONE. CLEAN SCENE. ROOM SECURED.

He pressed send.

Three seconds later, three dots danced on the screen.

SENDER: BURN THE REMAINS. DELETE THIS NUMBER.

Damian handed the phone back to Marcus.

"Charles thinks Isabella Rossi died a second time tonight."

"He will walk into that boardroom tomorrow morning believing he has won."

Marcus stepped forward.

"What do we do with this one, boss?"

Damian looked at the bleeding contractor with cold indifference.

"Turn him over to Detective Russo at the 14th precinct at six-thirty."

"Provide the encrypted phone, the Cayman deposit records, and the registered ballistics."

"Tell Russo that if Charles Moretti attempts to leave the city before nine, he is to be placed on a travel watch."

Damian turned toward the container exit.

"And Marcus?"

"Yes, sir?"

May you like

"Bring the car around."

"I have an old safe to open in my father's mausoleum."
