Chapter 9 - The Armor of Silk

The master suite of the waterfront penthouse was filled with the quiet rustle of luxury garments.

Elena stood beside a garment rack carrying three tailored suits and two evening gowns.

On the bed lay a bespoke two-piece suit made of midnight-blue wool and silk.

The jacket was cut with razor-sharp lapels that tapered into an elegant, narrow waist.

Beside it sat a pair of handmade Italian leather heels, sleek and understated.

Isabella stood before the tall tri-fold mirror, her eyes wide as Elena adjusted the shoulders of the jacket.

The cheap cotton uniform was gone.

The bruised runaway from North River had disappeared behind a facade of immaculate luxury.

Her dark hair was styled into a severe, elegant chignon that left her neck bare.

A light dusting of foundation concealed the purple bruise beneath her collarbone.

A single strip of sheer flesh-toned medical tape covered the small cut at her temple.

Around her neck hung the two silver pendants, joined together now by Damian’s hand.

They clicked against each other with every breath she took, cold against her warm skin.

Damian stood in the open doorway of the suite, adjusting his platinum cufflinks.

He wore a tailored black three-piece suit that made him look like an emperor preparing for an execution.

He stopped two paces behind Isabella and looked at her reflection in the mirror.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

The resemblance between Isabella and the portrait of Maria Rossi that Damian remembered was terrifying.

She had her mother’s fierce, unflinching eyes.

She had Vincent Moretti’s high, uncompromising forehead.

"Do you know how to hold a room, Isabella?"

Damian’s voice was smooth, quiet, and loaded with purpose.

Isabella met his gaze in the glass.

"I have spent my whole life being ignored by rooms like that."

"Then today, you will make them choke on their ignorance."

Damian walked to the dressing table and picked up a heavy gold fountain pen.

It was engraved with his father’s initials: V.M.

He turned and placed the heavy instrument into Isabella’s right hand.

"This belonged to the man who gave you that face."

"He used it to sign contracts that shaped this city for forty years."

"Today, you will use it to strip Charles Moretti of his name."

Isabella closed her fingers around the cool metal of the pen.

Her hand did not shake.

"What if the board refuses to recognize me?"

"What if they say the documents are forged?"

"They will try," Damian said coldly.

"Charles will scream that you are an imposter."

"Julian will claim that I am staging a coup to seize sole control."

"And that is when we will open the sealed records from the mausoleum."

"Dr. Vance’s certified genetic report has already been uploaded to the state surrogate court registry."

"The legal system already recognizes you, Isabella."

"Today is not about asking for their permission."

"It is about watching them realize that their empire already belongs to you."

Elena stepped forward and handed Isabella a small leather clutch.

"The car is waiting in the private basement bay, Mr. Moretti."

"Marcus reports that the entire board has already arrived at the headquarters."

"Mr. Charles entered the building ten minutes ago."

Damian checked his platinum watch.

It was eight-forty-five.

"Fifteen minutes."

He looked at Isabella and held out his arm.

"Are you ready, Miss Moretti?"

Isabella looked at the reflection in the mirror one last time.

She thought of the cold group home in upstate New York where she spent her seventh winter.

She thought of the bruises on her arms from foster parents who treated her like an extra check from the state.

She thought of her mother driving into a wall of flame so that a little girl could have a tomorrow.

May you like

She slipped her hand into the crook of Damian’s elbow.

"Let's go take back what belongs to my mother."
