Chapter 2 - The Silent Witness

The hospital waiting room was freezing.

I sat in the corner, clutching my stomach, refusing medical attention until I knew Ethan was safe.

Victor paced the floor like a caged lion.

Serena sat on a plush chair, scrolling through her phone as if she were at a salon, occasionally forcing a dramatic sniffle.

A doctor finally emerged from the emergency room doors.

“Mr. Blackwood? Ethan has a dislocated shoulder and severe bruising on his wrist. He’s resting now.”

Victor let out a breath he had been holding.

“Can I see him?”

“Yes, but he’s very fragile. He keeps asking for someone named Clara.”

Victor turned to me.

I was Clara. Just a maid hired three months ago, but the only person who had shown that little boy genuine love in this cold mansion.

Serena stood up abruptly. “That’s absurd! The boy is in shock. He doesn’t know what he’s saying.”

Victor ignored her and gestured for me to follow him.

As I stood, the pain in my abdomen flared, and I stumbled.

Before I could hit the ground, Victor’s strong arm caught my waist.

“Easy,” he whispered, his tone softer than I had ever heard it.

We walked into the room together.

Ethan was asleep, his tiny arm in a sling.

Tears pricked my eyes as I stroked his soft hair.

Victor stood silently, watching the undeniable bond between his son and his maid.

Suddenly, Victor’s phone buzzed. It was a message from his head of security.

Victor opened the video file.

The screen illuminated his sharp jawline as he watched the footage from the foyer.

He saw Serena slapping Ethan.

He saw me running in to shield the boy.

He saw Serena kicking me brutally to the floor.

The absolute silence in the room was deafening.

When Victor finally locked his phone, his eyes held a storm of pure, unadulterated fury.

He didn’t say a word to me. He just turned around and marched out into the hallway.

I heard Serena’s voice outside.

“Victor, honey, when can we go home? The smell of this hospital is making me nauseous.”

“You’re not going home, Serena,” Victor’s voice was like ice.
