Chapter 1 - The Man at the Door

The wedding was supposed to be the happiest day of Sarah Mitchell's life.
Until a dead man walked through the door.
Sarah stood near the back of the ballroom, watching her daughter, Emma, laugh with her new husband.
The room was filled with flowers, champagne, music, and hundreds of guests.
Emma was twenty-six.
Beautiful.
Happy.
And completely unaware that her mother's entire world was about to collapse.
Sarah smiled as her daughter danced with her husband.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
A man walked inside.
Nobody noticed him at first.
He was older.
His hair was mostly gray.
He wore a dark coat and stood completely still near the entrance.
Sarah looked toward the doors.
Her smile disappeared.
The glass in her hand slipped slightly.
She stared at the man.
Her heart stopped.
“No…”
The man slowly looked across the ballroom.
Their eyes met.
Sarah couldn't breathe.
It was him.
The shape of his face.
The scar above his eyebrow.
The way he stood.
Twelve years had passed.
But she knew that face.
She had seen it every night in her dreams.
Her husband.
David Mitchell.
The man who had died twelve years ago.
Sarah took one step backward.
Someone beside her asked,
“Are you okay?”
She didn't answer.
David began walking toward her.
Slowly.
Silently.
Sarah whispered his name.
“David?”
He stopped.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Hi, Sarah.”
The world seemed to disappear around her.
Music continued playing.
People laughed.
Emma danced.
But Sarah heard nothing.
“You're dead.”
David looked at her.
“I know.”
Sarah's voice trembled.
“I buried you.”
“I know.”
“I watched them close your coffin.”
David looked toward Emma.
Their daughter.
“She doesn't know?”
Sarah shook her head.
“No.”
David's face tightened.
“Good.”
Sarah stared at him.
“Good?”
David stepped closer.
“Don't tell her.”
Sarah's expression changed.
“What?”
“Not yet.”
“You disappear for twelve years, show up at our daughter's wedding, and tell me not to tell her?”
David looked around the ballroom.
Then he lowered his voice.
“I didn't come here to get my family back.”
Sarah's eyes filled with tears.
“Then why are you here?”
David reached inside his coat.
Sarah instinctively stepped back.
He pulled out an old photograph.
He handed it to her.
Sarah looked down.
It was a photograph of Emma.
But Emma wasn't alone.
She was standing beside a little boy.
A boy Sarah had never seen before.
Sarah looked up.
“Who is that?”
David didn't answer.
Sarah turned the photograph over.
There was a date written on the back.
October 14, 2014.
Sarah's face went pale.
That date was three weeks before David's supposed death.
She looked at him.
“You took this?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
David looked toward the ballroom entrance.
“From the place they kept me.”
Sarah's voice became almost inaudible.
“Who kept you?”
David didn't answer.
Instead, he said:
“Your daughter has been lied to her entire life.”
Sarah's heart sank.
“What are you talking about?”
David looked toward Emma again.
“She wasn't supposed to survive.”
Sarah froze.
“What?”
David stepped closer.
“There was an accident twelve years ago.”
“I know.”
“No.”
His voice became firmer.
“You know the story they told you.”
Sarah stared at him.
David whispered:
“That's not what happened.”
Before Sarah could respond, someone called her name from across the ballroom.
Emma.
“Mom!”
Sarah turned.
Emma was smiling.
She had no idea who the stranger standing beside her mother was.
Sarah looked back at David.
He was already stepping away.
“David!”
He stopped.
Sarah whispered:
“Where are you going?”
David looked at her one last time.
“Ask your daughter who the little boy is.”
Then he disappeared through the ballroom doors.
Sarah stood frozen.
She looked down at the photograph again.
Emma.
A little boy.
And a date from twelve years ago.
A date Sarah had spent twelve years believing was the day she lost her husband.
But now she understood something terrifying.
She hadn't lost David that day.
