Chapter 2 - The Secrets Beneath the Veil

The applause echoed through the grand hall as the band transitioned into a slow, romantic melody.
Sarah remained frozen near the mahogany pillar, her fingers tightly clutching the aged, Polaroid photograph.
The ink on the back felt rough against her thumb.
October 14, 2014.
Three weeks before the tragic car crash that allegedly claimed David's life and left a scarred, unidentifiable body in a burnt-out sedan.
The police report had been definitive.
Dental records, wedding bands, and DNA fragments matched enough to close the file.
The insurance payout had sustained Sarah and Emma through the darkest years of their grief.
Yet, the man who had just walked away carried the exact warmth and sorrow in his eyes that she had loved.
Emma glided across the polished marble floor in her sweeping white gown, resting her head on her new husband's shoulder.
Her new husband, Lucas Vance, came from one of the most powerful corporate dynasties in the city.
His father, Richard Vance, sat at the head table, watching the newlyweds with a cold, calculating gaze.
Richard had funded this entire wedding.
Richard had orchestrated Lucas and Emma's swift, flawless courtship.
And as Sarah stared at Richard across the room, a chilling thought crawled up her spine.
What if Richard Vance knew David?
What if the accident twelve years ago was never an accident at all?
Sarah forced a breathless smile as the song ended and guests began walking toward the tables.
She slipped the photograph into the hidden lining of her evening clutch.
She could not ruin Emma's reception.
Not tonight.
Not while hundreds of elite guests, business partners, and journalists captured every moment on their phones.
Emma walked over, her face flushed with bridal radiance, holding up the heavy lace of her skirt.
“Mom, where did you go? You look like you've seen a ghost.”
Sarah swallowed the lump in her throat, her hands trembling slightly as she cupped her daughter's face.
“Just... overwhelmed, darling. Remembering your father. How much he would have loved to see you today.”
Emma's smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a shadow passing over her bright eyes.
“I missed him today, too, Mom. Sometimes... sometimes I feel like I remember things I shouldn't. Like a hospital room. And a little boy holding my hand.”
Sarah's breath caught in her lungs.
“What did you say, Emma?”
Before Emma could answer, Lucas appeared beside his bride, wrapping a warm arm around her waist.
“Everything okay here, ladies? The photographer wants us for the sunset portraits on the terrace.”
Sarah looked directly into Lucas's polished, handsome face.
Beneath his charming smile, she noticed something she had previously ignored—a calculating hardness in his eyes.
“Everything is perfect, Lucas,” Sarah said slowly, her voice dropping an octave. “Just... family memories.”
Emma nodded, distracted by a group of bridesmaids waving from the bar.
“We'll be right back, Mom!”
As the young couple walked toward the glass terrace doors, Sarah watched them like a hawk.
She remembered the little boy in the photograph.
She remembered David's final words.
Ask your daughter who the little boy is.
Sarah knew she couldn't wait until the end of the reception.
She walked swiftly through the crowded banquet hall, bypassing the cocktail lounge, and headed straight toward the private family suite upstairs.
She needed to find answers before the night ended.
She needed to find out why her daughter remembered a hospital room that never existed in their official history.
As she pushed open the heavy oak door to the VIP suite, her phone buzzed violently in her evening bag.
An unknown number flashed across the screen.
She swiped to answer, pressing the speaker to her ear.
“Hello?”
A heavy, distorted voice whispered through the receiver.
May you like
“You shouldn't have let him talk to you, Sarah. If you want your daughter to see her wedding night, burn the photograph.”
The line went dead.
