Chapter 6 - The Patriarch’s Trap

Richard Vance stepped forward into the illumination of the overhead fluorescent lights, his posture immaculate in a tailored charcoal suit that betrayed no hint of his true age.

His silver hair was combed back with surgical precision, and his pale blue eyes held the cold, calculating detachment of a man who owned empires and decided human destinies as easily as signing corporate ledgers.

“You really should have stayed at the wedding, Sarah,” Richard said smoothly, his voice echoing softly against the steel shelving units. “Your daughter is currently dancing her first evening as a Vance, completely unaware that her mother is playing a game she cannot possibly win.”

Sarah slammed the manila folder shut, clutching it against her chest as she backed away until her spine hit the heavy metal bookcase.

“You kidnapped my husband,” Sarah spat out, her voice trembling with a mixture of raw grief and venomous rage. “You and your medical cronies stole my daughter's files, and you covered up whatever happened twelve years ago!”

Richard chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound that sent chills down Sarah's arms.

“Stole? Kidnapped? Such melodramatic words, my dear,” Richard replied, gesturing dismissively with his gloved hand. “We didn't steal David. We simply gave him a very lucrative choice: disappear completely, leave his young wife and daughter behind with a generous insurance settlement, or watch his entire family erased from existence overnight.”

Sarah’s breath caught. “Why? What could an ordinary family like ours possibly threaten you with?”

Richard stepped closer, his expression darkening into a mask of grim calculation.

“Ordinary? Your husband wasn't ordinary, Sarah. Before he married you, David was the lead bio-genetic researcher at Vance Pharmaceuticals' primary black-site laboratory,” Richard said, dropping the polite facade. “He discovered something he wasn't supposed to see. When he tried to smuggle experimental data out to protect children like the boy in that photograph, we had to intervene. The car crash was a convenient cleanup. But David refused to cooperate fully unless we promised to leave you and Emma completely untouched.”

Sarah stared at him in horror. “And the little boy? Who was he?”

“That, Mrs. Mitchell, is a secret that stays buried,” Richard motioned to his guards. “Take the folder from her. And escort our dear in-law back to her car before she does something foolish.”

Before the guards could lunge forward, a loud crash echoed from the front maintenance entrance.

Glass shattered, followed by a heavy metallic thud and shouting footsteps echoing through the service corridor.

“Mark!” Sarah screamed instinctively.

Richard's guards turned toward the sound, momentarily distracted, giving Sarah just enough opening to throw the heavy cardboard archive box straight into Richard’s chest, sending the patriarch stumbling backward into the metal shelving.
