Chapter 8 - The Safehouse Confession

The windshield wipers slapped rhythmically against the glass as Mark’s sedan sped through the rain-slicked highway leading away from the city center.

The neon lights of downtown faded into dark stretches of pine forests and winding rural roads.

Neither sibling spoke for the first twenty miles.

The weight of the revelations hung heavy in the cabin, suffocating and surreal.

Mark finally pulled the car off the main road, navigating down a gravel driveway hidden behind a thick grove of cedar trees, leading to an old, secluded family cabin they had inherited from their grandfather.

He cut the engine, the sudden silence broken only by the steady tapping of rain on the metal roof.

“We're safe here for the rest of the night,” Mark said quietly, turning to look at his sister. “No corporate security cameras. No Vance operatives.”

Sarah stared down at the single crumpled sheet of paper in her hand, her thumb tracing David’s handwriting in the margin.

Sector 4. If Emma remembers, she holds the key.

“Mark,” Sarah whispered, her voice cracking. “David didn't just abandon us twelve years ago. He was protecting us. He discovered something terrifying about Richard Vance's pharmaceutical labs—something involving children.”

Mark unbuckled his seatbelt, leaning forward to rest his hands on the steering wheel.

“When I was on the flight here, I did some deep-diving into old corporate bankruptcy filings from Vance Pharmaceuticals circa 2014,” Mark said grimly. “Most of their public records are heavily scrubbed, but I found court petitions regarding a government-backed pediatric clinical trial that was mysteriously shut down overnight. Dozens of children from local orphanages and foster systems were listed as participants. Many of them... never checked out.”

Sarah’s blood ran cold. “You're saying Richard Vance was running illegal human trials?”

“I’m saying Richard Vance built his entire medical empire on the backs of children who had no family to look for them,” Mark replied. “And somehow, Emma and that mysterious little boy crossed paths with whatever David was hiding.”

Sarah looked out the frosted window toward the dark woods.

“Emma is married to Lucas now. She is living inside their fortress.”

“Which means she is sitting right in the lion's den,” Mark said sharply. “If Richard realizes your daughter remembers anything about that facility, her life won't be worth a nickel.”

Sarah gripped the edge of the car seat.

“We have to get her out. Tonight.”

“We can’t just walk into the Vance estate and kidnap the bride, Sarah,” Mark argued, running a hand through his hair in frustration. “The entire compound is guarded like a military base. We need leverage. We need to find out where David is hiding right now.”

As if on cue, Sarah’s phone buzzed violently against the console.

It wasn't a phone call.

It was an incoming video file from an encrypted, unknown sender.

Sarah stared at the screen, her heart hammering against her ribs.

She pressed play.

The screen flickered, revealing a dimly lit basement room with concrete walls.

Bound tightly to a metal chair was David.

His face was bruised, and a fresh cut bled slowly above his right eyebrow.

Standing just out of camera focus was a tall, familiar figure wearing a gold signet ring with the Vance family crest.

A cold, calculated voice echoed from the phone speaker.

“Hello, Sarah. If you want to see your husband draw another breath, bring the archive page and meet me at the old lighthouse on Blackwood Cliff by sunrise. Come alone. Or you’ll be burying two bodies this time.”
