Chapter 7 - THE COUNTER-ATTACK: DESPERATE CORNERS AND PUBLIC EXPOSURE

True to Emma's prediction, the fallout hit within forty-eight hours, but it didn't come in the form of legal negotiations. It came in the form of yellow journalism and public sabotage.

Margaret Vance, realizing that her son was entirely serious about sending her and her other children to federal prison, decided to strike back where it hurt Leo the most: his global restaurant empire, Vance Hospitality Group.

A prominent, sensationalist tabloid blog published a blistering front-page exposé titled: “MILLIONAIRE CHEF LEO VANCE ACCUSED OF ABANDONING AND STARVING HIS OWN ELDERLY MOTHER AND FAMILY IN TEXAS MANSION!”

The article was packed with fabricated lies, doctored photographs showing Margaret crying outside a gated estate in inexpensive clothes, and emotional quotes from Jennifer claiming that Leo had become a heartless tyrant corrupted by wealth, locking his own flesh and blood out in the cold while living in decadent luxury.

Social media erupted. Within six hours, the hashtag #BoycottVanceRestaurants was trending nationwide. Angry protestors gathered outside the flagship Vance Steakhouse in downtown Dallas, holding signs and chanting slogans accusing Leo of cruelty and familial neglect. Corporate partners began calling Marcus's office, expressing panic over potential brand damage and threatening to pull investments.

Inside the mansion’s study, the glowing television screen flashed images of the protestors outside his restaurant.

Leo sat calmly, sipping a cup of black coffee, watching CNN run a brief morning segment on the family feud.

Emma walked into the study carrying a tablet. "Leo, the stock for the parent company dropped three percent in pre-market trading. Your PR team is downstairs; they want to issue a formal press statement denying the allegations and offering a financial settlement to your mother to make the story go away."

Leo looked up, a cold, confident smile touching the corners of his mouth. "A settlement? Giving them a single penny would be validating their extortion."

"So what do you want to do?" Emma asked, leaning against the edge of the desk, her eyes bright with unwavering trust. "If we don't fight back publicly, the protestors might force the board to panic."

"My PR team thinks like corporate cowards," Leo said, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "They want to hide behind legal jargon. We aren't going to hide. We are going to shine a floodlight so bright it burns the cockroaches right out of the shadows."

"What do you mean?"

"Call a press conference," Leo instructed smoothly. "Not in some sterile hotel ballroom. Right here, on the front steps of the mansion. Invite every major news outlet, every tabloid reporter, and every financial journalist in Texas. Tell them Leo Vance is going to address the allegations face-to-face at noon today."

Emma’s eyes widened slightly, then a slow, knowing smile spread across her face. "You have the receipts, don't you?"

"Every bank transfer, every forged power of attorney, every security camera recording of Jennifer treating you like a servant," Leo said, his eyes flashing with lethal precision. "Let's see how much sympathy my mother gets when the world finds out what she actually did."
