Chapter 12 - The Wolves in Silk

The Grand Conservatory of the Moretti estate was bathed in midday light filtering through four thousand panes of antique glass.
Around the central fountain of white Carrara marble stood seven women and four men who represented the oldest money in Manhattan.
They wore cashmere coats from Parisian ateliers, bespoke Italian worsted wool, and pearls that had been passed down through five generations of railroad barons.
Leading them was Eleanor Vance, the seventy-two-year-old matriarch of the Vance estate and sister to the disgraced, imprisoned Marcus Vance.
Her lips were painted the color of dried blood, and her eyes were cold, sharp emeralds set in a face that had never known physical hardship.
Beside her stood Beatrice Sterling, the elder sister of Arthur Sterling, her diamond brooch trembling with righteous fury.
When the brass-trimmed double doors of the conservatory opened, the murmurs died instantly.
Luca Moretti strode into the glass pavilion, exuding an aura of absolute dominance that made the marble floor seem to vibrate beneath his leather shoes.
On his right arm walked Mia Carter.
She wore a floor-length tailored gown of midnight-blue velvet, designed with a high structured collar that framed her slender neck.
Her dark hair was swept up into an intricate, elegant crown, revealing diamond drop earrings that had once belonged to the Moretti family’s founding matriarch.
Her bandaged knee was hidden beneath the heavy silk folds, but she walked with an upright, unbreakable posture.
She did not look down.
She did not flinch beneath the collective, hostile glare of eleven billionaires who viewed her as an invasive weed in their manicured garden.
"Luca," Eleanor Vance began, her voice cutting through the humid air of the greenhouse like a rusty saw.
"We came here as representatives of the Metropolitan Heritage Trust."
"Our families have shared executive boxes at the opera and seats on hospital charity boards for over a century."
"We endured the tragic loss of Elena."
"We remained silent during your erratic lockdown of the charity gala."
"We even withheld public comment when federal marshals stormed our corporate headquarters based on questionable documentation."
She turned her venomous gaze directly toward Mia, looking at her as if she were a cockroach crawling across an antique tablecloth.
"But we will not tolerate the degradation of our social order."
"To parade a probationary domestic maid through the executive halls of Moretti Global is an insult to your late wife’s memory."
"To present this girl as your official companion at next week's Governor’s Winter Gala makes our entire community a laughingstock."
Beatrice Sterling stepped forward, her voice trembling with theatrical disgust.
"Her mother lived on welfare vouchers in Queens, Luca!"
"Her father died in a municipal warehouse fire while under investigation for inventory theft!"
"This family comes from the gutter."
"They are professional opportunists who prey on wealthy men grieving their deceased wives."
"Arthur was only trying to protect your empire from being swallowed by a parasite!"
The conservatory fell into a terrifying, suffocating silence.
Two guards near the iron pillars instinctively shifted their weight, anticipating the explosive rage of the Moretti patriarch.
Luca did not shout.
He did not raise his hand.
He simply looked at Eleanor Vance and Beatrice Sterling with an expression of cold, detached pity.
"Have you finished speaking?" Luca asked softly.
Eleanor scoffed, adjusting her mink stole.
"We came to deliver an ultimatum, Luca."
"Either you remove this girl from your residence and place your son under the supervision of a certified high-society governess,"
"Or every family represented in this room will pull their capital reserves from your shipping syndicates."
"We will freeze your commercial access to the European ports."
"We will turn the Moretti name into an isolated pariah on Wall Street."
Luca let out a short, quiet breath that sounded like falling snow.
He turned slightly toward Mia.
"Mia," Luca said, his voice ringing through the glass chamber.
"Do you recall the third envelope we examined in the Zurich vault yesterday morning?"
Mia stepped forward, her green eyes locking onto Eleanor Vance with chilling precision.
"I remember it clearly, Luca," Mia replied, her voice smooth, articulate, and completely devoid of fear.
"The third envelope contained the offshore tax shell accounts for Vance & Associates."
"Specifically, account number seven-seven-nine at the Banque Privée in Geneva."
Eleanor Vance’s painted lips parted slightly, her diamond-clad hand freezing mid-air.
"That account was established twenty years ago by your husband, Eleanor," Mia continued, taking a measured step closer to the old woman.
"It was funded entirely by kickbacks paid by the Sterling Corporation to overlook unregistered chemical shipments passing through the Hudson shipping yards."
"The very shipments that contaminated the municipal water reservoir in your family's home district."
"The documents bear your personal signature as the sole surviving beneficiary."
Eleanor’s pale skin turned an ash-gray color beneath her heavy makeup.
"That is confidential financial data," Eleanor stammered, backing away half an inch.
"You have no authority to access—"
"I granted her full executive access to every document my wife died to protect, Eleanor," Luca interrupted, his voice dropping into a deadly register.
"You speak of social degradation?"
"You speak of Elena's memory?"
"My wife was assassinated because she discovered that your families were financing private yachts with the blood of overdosed children on our city's streets!"
Luca took a slow, menacing step toward the gathered circle of elite patrons.
"You threaten to pull your capital reserves from my fleet?"
"Your reserves were frozen by the Federal Department of Treasury at nine o’clock this morning."
"Your family trusts are under criminal indictment for racketeering."
"And the seats you hold on those hospital charity boards will be occupied by public prosecutors before the sun sets tonight."
Beatrice Sterling began to shake violently, looking around the room for support from the other board members.
Every single one of them had stepped backward, keeping their eyes glued to the marble floor, desperately distancing themselves from the falling dynasties.
Luca reached out and took Mia’s hand, lacing his long, powerful fingers through hers for everyone in the room to witness.
"Look at her, Eleanor," Luca commanded, his voice echoing off the glass roof like thunder.
"This is Mia Carter."
"She did not inherit her dignity from bloodstained trusts or offshore shell corporations."
"She earned it by protecting my son when your brothers and nephews were trying to drown him in the dark."
"She will sit at my right hand at the Governor's Gala."
"She will oversee the restructuring of the Moretti Philanthropic Foundation."
"And if any one of you breathes her name in public without the utmost respect,"
"I will personally ensure that your families spend the rest of their generations begging for work in the very warehouses you burned down for insurance money."
Luca turned his back on them with absolute finality.
"Marco," Luca said without looking over his shoulder.
"Escort these trespassers to the main gate."
"And if they ever set foot on my driveway again, release the hounds."
May you like
Mia walked beside Luca toward the grand exit, her heart beating with fierce triumph.
Behind them, the proud matriarchs of Manhattan stood broken and silenced amidst their useless pearls, watching the former maid command the empire they had spent a century trying to steal.
