Chapter 7 - The Blood on the Highway

The black convoy moved through the iron gates of the Moretti estate like a fleet of armored warships.

Luca sat in the reinforced rear cabin of an extended luxury SUV, his eyes scanning the tree-lined private driveway.

Mia sat beside him, holding Leo’s hand firmly in her lap.

Two heavy security escort vehicles led the formation, while two more trailed closely behind.

Every vehicle was equipped with run-flat tires, bullet-resistant glass, and encrypted satellite communication.

Yet the atmosphere inside the cabin was as taut as a drawn bowstring.

"Arthur Sterling knows about the key," Luca said, speaking into a secure radio channel linked to Marco in the front passenger seat.

"The moment we pulled the vehicle registry from Vance’s encrypted phone, Sterling’s private security firm went on red alert."

"They know we are heading for the vault."

Mia looked out the tinted window as the suburban greenery gave way to the concrete expanse of the northern interstate.

"What is inside that vault, Luca?" she asked quietly.

"Elena kept a duplicate log of the shipping manifests for our transatlantic freighters," Luca explained, his voice low and dangerous.

"Five years ago, my father signed a joint maritime treaty with the Sterling Corporation."

"Elena discovered that the containers registered as industrial machinery were actually carrying unregistered precursor chemicals."

"The kind of chemicals used to synthesize military-grade narcotics and unregistered pharmaceuticals."

"She tried to bring the documents to the federal authorities on her own."

"Before she could reach the prosecutor, her boat suffered an engine explosion on Lake Como."

Mia shivered, pressing Leo closer to her side.

"They murdered your wife because she wouldn't let them turn your family ships into smuggling vessels."

"Yes," Luca said, his jaw tightening into steel.

"And they used Vance and Julian to keep me blinded by corporate restructuring while they cleaned up the paper trail."

Suddenly, a deafening horn sounded from the left lane of the highway.

A massive flatbed industrial truck, painted dull gray with no commercial markings, swerved violently across three lanes of traffic.

"Ambush!" Marco shouted from the front seat, drawing his sidearm in a single, fluid motion.

"Brace for impact!"

The heavy truck rammed into the side of the lead escort vehicle with catastrophic force.

The lead SUV spun out of control, its tires screeching in smoke before it flipped over the guardrail and rolled down the embankment.

Mia gasped, throwing her entire upper body over Leo to shield the boy against the seat cushion.

"Stay down!" Luca roared, pulling a suppressed semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster.

A second unmarked black pickup truck accelerated from the rear, slamming directly into the back bumper of Luca’s vehicle.

The shockwave shuddered through the armored frame, throwing Mia against the door panel.

Her injured knee struck the leather armrest, sending a white-hot flash of pain through her leg.

She didn't cry out.

She only tightened her grip around Leo’s shoulders, keeping his small frame pinned beneath her chest.

"I’ve got you, Leo," she whispered through gritted teeth.

"Keep your eyes closed! Do not look up!"

The side glass beside Mia exploded into a web of spiderweb fractures as high-caliber rounds slammed into the bullet-resistant pane.

The heavy glass held, but the impact sounded like hammer blows against an anvil.

Luca lowered his window by two inches and returned fire with terrifying, lethal precision.

Three rapid shots echoed through the cabin.

The driver of the trailing pickup truck slumped forward over his steering wheel, and the vehicle careened wildly into the concrete median, bursting into a wall of sparks.

"Marco, clear the off-ramp!" Luca commanded, his voice cold and steady amid the gunfire.

"Ram the civilian barrier if you have to!"

"Hold on, sir!" the driver yelled, throwing the wheel hard to the right.

The armored SUV roared up the steep exit ramp leading into the downtown commercial district.

Sirens began to wail in the far distance, signaling the delayed arrival of metropolitan police cruisers.

The remaining attacker vehicle attempted to follow, but Luca’s rear escort truck broadsided it at fifty miles per hour, sacrificing their own vehicle to seal the ramp.

The metal groaned and tore in a violent collision behind them.

Inside the cabin, the heavy smell of burnt rubber and gunpowder hung in the conditioned air.

Luca shoved his weapon back into its holster and turned immediately to Mia and his son.

His large hands reached out, checking Leo’s arms and neck for any signs of injury.

"Leo? Did anything hit you?"

The little boy shook his head, his face pale as paper, his hands clutching Mia’s sweater like a lifeline.

Then Luca’s gaze shifted to Mia.

A jagged shard of shattered glass from the outer layer of the window had sliced through her sweater sleeve, leaving a line of bright red blood across her forearm.

Her face was smeared with dust, and her breathing was ragged and shallow.

Luca’s expression shifted from calculated rage to something profound and raw.

He pulled a silk handkerchief from his breast pocket and wrapped it firmly around her bleeding arm.

His fingers lingered against her skin, his touch remarkably tender despite the violence of the last three minutes.

"You shielded him with your own body," Luca said softly, his voice trembling with an emotion he could not mask.

"Again."

"He is a child, Luca," Mia replied, looking up into his storm-gray eyes without fear.

"I will never let someone take him from you."

Luca looked at her for a long, silent moment, his hand resting gently against the side of her neck.

"Nobody has ever fought for my blood without demanding a contract first," he murmured, his thumb brushing a speck of dust from her cheekbone.

"You have given him more loyalty in two days than my own family offered in thirty years."

The armored SUV slowed to a crawl, turning into the underground fortified parking garage of the Zurich Trust Financial Tower.

The heavy steel gates rolled shut behind them, cutting off the wail of city sirens.

Luca withdrew his hand, his eyes returning to cold, calculated slate.

"We have five minutes before Arthur Sterling’s lawyers attempt to file an emergency freeze on this facility."

"Marco, secure the vault elevator."

May you like

"Mia, stay beside me."

"It is time to see what my wife left behind."
