Chapter 15 - The Vow by the White Water

One month later, the grand terrace of the Moretti estate in New York had been completely reborn.

The black, menacing granite pool where six-year-old Leo had nearly drowned was gone forever.

In its place stood a breathtaking memorial reflecting garden carved from brilliant white Greek marble.

The water was shallow, barely three inches deep, filled with white water lilies and smooth river stones that murmured beneath crystal-clear fountains.

The rusty iron gate that had once been sabotaged with a rubber wedge had been replaced by an open archway of intertwined white roses and jasmine vines.

Surrounding the garden were six hundred distinguished guests.

Presidents of universities, federal judges, international diplomats, and honest industrial leaders sat in rows of ivory chairs beneath the autumn canopy.

Even Sarah Carter sat in the front row, looking radiant and healthy in a tailored silver-gray silk gown, holding the hand of the chief physician who had overseen her complete recovery.

The orchestra began to play a slow, magnificent hymn of strings and brass.

At the end of the aisle stood Luca Moretti.

He wore an immaculate black tuxedo with a white gardenia pinned to his lapel, his tall frame commanding the entire assembly with quiet, undisputed authority.

Beside him stood Marco, wearing his formal military dress blues, smiling with genuine pride.

Then the double doors of the grand conservatory opened.

Walking down the rose-petal pathway was young Leo, wearing a miniature tuxedo, carrying two gold wedding bands nestled on a pillow of white velvet.

And walking behind him, escorted by no billionaire sponsor or society patron, was Mia Carter.

She walked on her own two feet, her healed knee strong and steady, her head held high like an empress claiming her rightful throne.

Her wedding gown was a masterwork of French silk and handmade Italian lace, flowing behind her in an eight-foot train that brushed the white marble tiles.

The veil was sheer as morning mist, revealing her radiant green eyes and a smile that seemed to illuminate the entire estate.

On her finger, the Ceylon sapphire caught the afternoon sun, glowing like a piece of the Mediterranean sky.

As she reached the altar beside the reflecting pool, Luca stepped forward and gently lifted her veil.

His storm-gray eyes were shining with unshed tears of profound, overwhelming joy.

"You look like an impossible dream, Mia," Luca whispered, his voice trembling with emotion.

"I am not a dream, Luca," Mia replied softly, looking directly into his heart.

"I am your reality."

The federal judge presiding over the ceremony cleared his throat, smiling at the couple.

"Luca Moretti," the judge spoke, his voice carrying across the silent gardens.

"Do you take Mia Carter to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, through shadow and light, in wealth and in adversity, to protect and honor for all the days of your life?"

Luca did not hesitate for a fraction of a second.

He took Mia’s right hand into his own, his grip strong, protective, and permanent.

"I take her," Luca said, his voice echoing across the white marble like an unbreakable oath.

"I take her as the guardian of my bloodline, the sovereign of my home, and the sole keeper of my soul."

"I vow that every breath I take will be dedicated to her honor, her safety, and her happiness."

The judge turned to Mia.

"Mia Carter, do you take Luca Moretti to be your lawfully wedded husband, to stand beside him as partner and equal, through triumph and trial, to love and cherish without end?"

Mia looked down at Leo, who was beaming up at her, and then into Luca’s loving eyes.

"I take him," Mia declared, her clear, melodious voice ringing through the crisp autumn air.

"I take him as my partner, my protector, and my true home."

"I vow to stand before any storm that dares touch our family, and to remind him every day that love is stronger than any darkness this world can create."

Leo stepped forward, holding up the velvet pillow.

Luca took the gold band and slid it onto Mia’s finger, sealing the sapphire in a circle of eternal gold.

Mia took the second band and placed it onto Luca’s ring finger, the heavy metal settling naturally against his strong hand.

"By the authority granted to me by the law and by the witness of this family," the judge pronounced with a warm smile,

"I now declare you husband and wife."

"Luca, you may kiss your bride."

Luca wrapped his arms around Mia’s waist, pulling her flush against his chest, and kissed her with a fierce, breathtaking devotion that drew a thunderous ovation from six hundred guests.

The orchestra erupted into a triumphant crescendo of joy.

Leo threw his arms around both of their waists, burying himself between them with boundless laughter.

Luca lifted his son onto his shoulder with one arm while keeping his other arm firmly around Mia’s waist.

Together, the three of them turned to face the world.

The reporters outside the perimeter gates snapped photographs that would grace the front pages of international newspapers by morning.

There were no scandalous lies left to tell.

There were no whispers of an opportunistic maid or an erratic widower.

The headlines would read only the unvarnished truth:

"The Protector of the Heir Becomes the Empress of the Empire."

As they walked down the white marble aisle toward the grand ballroom, Mia looked down into the clear, shallow water of the reflecting pool.

The dark shadows of fear, murder, and poverty had been completely erased by the light.

She had entered the Moretti estate as a desperate servant in a stained uniform, praying only to survive the week.

She walked out as a beloved wife, a devoted mother, and the undisputed matriarch of a dynasty that would never bleed in the dark again.
