Chapter 13 - The Last Breath of the Viper

The midnight storm struck the coastal hills with ferocious intensity.

Sheets of freezing rain lashed against the bullet-resistant windows of the Moretti estate, drowning out the distant hum of the highway.

Inside the North Wing security hub, Marco stared at a bank of sixteen high-resolution thermal imaging monitors.

Beside him stood Luca, his suit jacket discarded, wearing a black tactical sweater with a communication headset clipped to his ear.

"The signal came from a disposable satellite uplink outside the perimeter wall," Marco reported, his fingers dancing across the mechanical keyboard.

"Julian’s former head of private security, Viktor Kane."

"He was dishonorably discharged from the French Foreign Legion ten years ago."

"He didn't get paid when Arthur Sterling’s accounts were frozen."

"He knows he has a federal warrant on his head."

"He has nothing left to lose."

Luca’s eyes narrowed as a cluster of three heat signatures flickered along the dense woods bordering the pool terrace.

"He wants the vault hard drives," Luca said coldly.

"He thinks he can sell the encrypted manifests to the South American cartels to finance his escape to Russia."

"Where is Mia?"

"She is in the reinforced nursery with Leo and her mother," Marco answered.

"The secondary blast doors are locked from the inside."

"Good," Luca whispered, checking the chamber of his tactical pistol with a sharp, metallic slide.

"Cut the perimeter lights on the lower patio."

"Let them come onto the flagstones."

"This ends tonight."

Down in the fortified master nursery, Mia sat on the edge of the large wool rug, holding Leo’s hand.

The little boy was building a miniature stone bridge using polished wooden blocks.

Sarah Carter was resting quietly in an adjoining medical bed, lulled to sleep by the steady patter of rain against the reinforced glass.

Suddenly, the soft hum of the ventilation system clicked off.

A faint red emergency beacon began to pulse silently over the heavy steel door.

Leo looked up, his green eyes wide with sudden terror.

"Mia," Leo whispered, clinging to her skirt.

"The red light means the bad men are outside."

Mia’s pulse surged, but she forced every muscle in her face to remain completely calm.

"Your father and Marco are outside, Leo," Mia said softly, kissing his forehead.

"Nobody can get through this door."

Then came a muffled thump from the ceiling above the private dressing corridor.

A maintenance access hatch in the ceiling creaked open.

A masked man dressed in damp black tactical gear dropped through the opening, landing silently on the hardwood floor like a panther.

He held a combat knife with a serrated carbon blade in his right hand.

It was Viktor Kane.

He had bypassed the biometric doors entirely by crawling through the reinforced industrial air ducts.

Leo let out a piercing shriek of horror.

"Leo, behind the bed! Now!" Mia commanded, her voice ringing with motherly fury.

She did not freeze.

She did not beg.

She grabbed the heavy iron poker from the ornamental brick fireplace beside the nursery bookshelf.

Viktor Kane ripped his mask off, revealing a face scarred by shrapnel and eyes clouded with desperate, rabid madness.

"Where are the drives, girl?" Viktor snarled, advancing toward the bed with his knife raised.

"Give me the Zurich drives and I’ll leave the brat breathing."

"You won't touch him," Mia said, planting her feet wide on the hardwood floor.

Her injured knee sent a spike of agony through her leg, but she locked her joint and raised the iron poker like a broadsword.

Viktor sneered, lunging forward with a blindingly fast slash meant to disarm her.

Mia remembered the long hours in her youth spent loading heavy crates of medical supplies onto high metal shelves.

She didn't try to parry the knife.

She ducked beneath his extended arm, sidestepping his momentum, and swung the heavy iron rod with both hands.

The solid iron slammed directly into Viktor’s left knee with a sickening, wet crunch.

The mercenary roared in agony, his leg buckling beneath him as he crashed onto his side.

He rolled instantly, slashing wildly with the blade, slicing through the hem of Mia’s skirt and grazing her calf.

Mia stumbled backward, her breath ragged, but she raised the poker again, refusing to give an inch of ground toward the bed where Leo was hiding.

"You miserable little servant!" Viktor spat, blood bubbling on his lips as he struggled to raise his pistol from his hip holster.

Before his fingers could clear the leather holster, the reinforced blast door blew inward with a deafening metallic roar.

Luca Moretti surged through the dust like an avenging demon.

He caught Viktor’s extended arm before the weapon could level, twisting the mercenary’s wrist until the joint shattered like dry firewood.

The pistol dropped to the floorboards.

Luca drove his knee into Viktor’s ribs, pinning the mercenary against the stone fireplace hearth.

Luca’s storm-gray eyes were entirely black with lethal, unbridled fury.

He pulled his tactical blade and pressed the razor edge directly against Viktor’s carotid artery.

"Give me one reason," Luca whispered, his voice vibrating with a primal darkness that chilled the room to absolute zero.

"Give me one single reason why I shouldn't carve your heart out onto this rug."

Viktor gasped for air, his eyes bulging with the realization of his immediate death.

"Luca... wait..." Mia’s trembling voice broke through the madness.

Luca froze.

He looked over his shoulder.

Mia was standing beside the bed, her hand resting protectively over Leo’s head as the boy peeked out from behind her legs.

Her calf was bleeding, her hair was disheveled, but her eyes held a steady, shining clarity.

"Don't do it, Luca," Mia said softly, her chest heaving.

"Leo is watching."

"Do not let their poison turn you into a murderer in front of your son."

"Let the law bury them."

Luca stared at Mia, the ferocious bloodlust in his veins slowly giving way to her steadying presence.

He looked down at his terrified son, who was watching him with wide, pleading eyes.

Luca slowly lowered the blade.

He delivered a brutal, concussive strike with the hilt of his weapon to Viktor’s temple, knocking the mercenary instantly into unconsciousness.

Marco rushed into the room with four tactical guards, securing Viktor in heavy steel restraints and hauling the limp body out into the corridor.

The nursery fell completely silent except for the drumming rain outside.

Luca dropped the knife onto the floor.

He walked over to Mia, his hands shaking slightly from the leftover adrenaline.

He knelt down and examined the shallow cut on her calf, his touch burning with fierce, protective devotion.

"You fought a military operative with a fireplace poker," Luca murmured, his voice cracking with awe and disbelief.

"He was trying to get to Leo," Mia whispered, a single tear escaping her eye as the shock finally washed over her.

"I would have fought an entire army."

Leo threw his arms around Mia’s waist, sobbing openly for the first time since the night at the pool.

"Mia saved me again, Papa!" the boy cried, burying his face in her torn skirt.

"She’s our angel!"

Luca stood up, pulling both Mia and Leo into an embrace so tight and unyielding that the storm outside seemed to fade into nothingness.

"Not an angel, Leo," Luca whispered against Mia’s trembling lips, his eyes shining with complete, unconditional surrender.
