Chapter 9 - The Blood on the Boardroom Glass

The thirty-second floor of the Moretti Global headquarters was an arena of glass, polished chrome, and cold ambition.
Twelve senior board members sat around the forty-foot conference table made of smoked glass.
At the head of the room stood Arthur Sterling, a sixty-five-year-old titan with silver hair swept back like a hawk’s plumage.
He wore a bespoke three-piece suit that cost more than an average family earned in three years.
Beside him sat his daughter Victoria, her wrist wrapped in a discreet silk scarf to conceal the bruises Luca had left behind.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur announced, his booming voice commanding the entire executive chamber.
"The reports from the metropolitan police are unmistakable."
"An hour ago, Luca Moretti’s private convoy was involved in a catastrophic vehicular incident on the northern expressway."
"His mental instability following his wife’s death has reached a point of catastrophic liability for this company."
"He has unlawfully detained his own brother, assaulted my daughter, and brought a common domestic cleaner into executive operations."
Arthur placed his palms flat on the smoked glass table, leaning forward with practiced authority.
"Under Section Nine of the corporate charter, I move for an immediate emergency vote to strip Luca Moretti of his CEO status and place his voting shares under the stewardship of the Sterling Trust."
Victoria smiled coldly from her seat, her eyes gleaming with triumphant anticipation.
Several board members nodded in fearful agreement, while others looked down at their papers, unwilling to oppose the ruthless old man.
"All those in favor of the motion?" Arthur asked, raising his own right hand.
Before a single board member could raise their hand, the heavy frosted-glass doors of the boardroom were blown off their hinges with a thunderous crash.
The double doors slammed against the hardwood walls, cracking the glass into a thousand spiderweb fractures.
Arthur jumped backward, his aristocratic composure shattering instantly.
Luca Moretti strode into the boardroom like an invading conqueror.
His suit jacket was unbuttoned, his shirt collar slightly open, and his eyes burned with an icy ferocity that paralyzed every person at the table.
Flanking him were six federal agents wearing ballistic vests emblazoned with the gold emblems of the Department of Justice.
And walking immediately beside Luca, her head held high and her posture straight as an arrow, was Mia Carter.
She wore a simple, elegant black tailored suit that Luca’s team had procured from the downtown offices.
Her forearm was bandaged beneath her sleeve, but her gaze was unwavering and fearless.
Behind them, Marco held young Leo’s hand, keeping the boy protected behind the wall of federal tactical shields.
Victoria’s jaw dropped in absolute horror.
"Luca!" she gasped, clutching her throat.
"You... you were on the highway—"
"You sound disappointed that your mercenaries failed to execute my son, Victoria," Luca said, his voice echoing through the silent boardroom like a death knell.
Arthur Sterling recovered his voice, though his hands shook as he adjusted his diamond tie clip.
"This is an executive meeting, Luca! You cannot bring federal agents and your hired help into a private shareholder assembly!"
Luca did not answer him with words.
He walked to the center of the smoked glass table, pulled the thick manila envelope from his coat, and slammed it onto the glass with explosive force.
The heavy sound reverberated through the room like a gunshot.
"Open it, Arthur," Luca commanded softly.
Arthur hesitated, his eyes darting toward the exits, only to find two armed Marshals standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the doorway.
With trembling fingers, the old man reached out and untied the red string of the envelope.
He pulled out the first document.
His face turned the color of damp chalk.
"The Swiss mechanic confessed to the federal prosecutor forty minutes ago," Luca said, speaking to the entire board.
"He confirmed that the wire transfer for twenty million Swiss francs originated from the Sterling Maritime Cayman account."
"The order to sever the fuel line on Elena’s boat came directly from Arthur Sterling’s personal satellite phone."
Murmurs of absolute horror rippled through the gathered executives.
Two board members stood up immediately, backing away from Arthur as though he carried the plague.
"That's a forgery!" Arthur roared, throwing the papers onto the table.
"You manufactured these lies to save your failing leadership!"
"The ink is twenty-six months old, Mr. Sterling," Mia’s clear, steady voice sliced through the old man’s shouting.
Every eye in the room snapped to Mia.
She stepped forward, placing both hands firmly on the edge of the glass table.
"The documents bear the official watermarks of the Zurich Maritime Registry," Mia continued, her tone clinical and unyielding.
"They contain the chemical analysis of the shipments your fleet carried through the northern docks."
"Precursor chemicals for black-market fentanyl, masked as commercial solvents."
"Elena Moretti discovered your supply chain."
"She recorded your threats in this very building."
"And when that wasn't enough to secure your takeover, you ordered your daughter to slip chloral hydrate into a six-year-old child's breakfast."
Victoria leaped out of her chair, shrieking in frantic denial.
"Shut up! Shut up, you worthless maid! Papa, tell them she’s lying!"
"Take them into custody," the lead Federal Marshal announced, stepping forward with heavy steel handcuffs.
"Arthur Sterling, Victoria Sterling, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, maritime smuggling, and attempted homicide of a minor."
Arthur backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, his chest heaving with desperate fury.
"You think this is over, Luca?" Arthur snarled, his face twisted in venomous madness.
"You think a street girl and a dead wife can dismantle what I built?"
"You will never survive the week!"
The Marshals grabbed Arthur’s arms, twisting them behind his back and forcing him down against the smoked glass table.
Victoria wept hysterically as the metal cuffs clicked around her delicate wrists.
Luca did not look at Arthur.
He did not look at Victoria.
He walked past the fallen tycoons and stood at the head of the conference table, the rightful master of the Moretti empire.
He looked around the table at the remaining, terrified board members.
"The meeting is adjourned," Luca said quietly.

"Sell your Sterling stock before the market opens tomorrow."
"Because by noon, that name will no longer exist in this city."
