Chapter 2 - THE BREAKING POINT AND THE FALL OF THE MASK

At the altar, Lucas Vance stood tall, his broad shoulders squared beneath a bespoke charcoal tuxedo. His chestnut hair was neatly styled, but his eyes—usually sharp and analytical—were soft with nervous anticipation. He loved Elena, or at least he believed he did. She had filled the hollow void in his home, bringing order to chaos, elegance to routine, and above all, affection to Lily.

Yet, in the back of his mind, a faint, nagging unease had lingered. Little things. A coldness in Elena's eyes when she thought no one was watching. The way Lily had started flinching whenever Elena raised her hand to stroke her hair. The sudden dismissal of the nanny who had been with the family for five years, replaced by a quiet, uncommunicative agency nurse.

The music swelled. The double doors at the end of the aisle opened, revealing the bridesmaids. But where Elena should have been walking beside her maid of honor, a sudden, frantic commotion erupted near the side corridor leading from the bridal suites.

"Daddy! Daddy, help!"

The high-pitched, sobbing cry cut through the classical string arrangement like a razor. The string quartet ground to an awkward, discordant halt. Heads whipped around.

Lucas froze. He knew that voice better than his own heartbeat.

Before the ushers could react, the side door burst open. Lily stumbled out into the glittering wedding hall. Her cream-colored bridesmaid dress was slightly askew, her hair bow sliding down her tangled brown curls. Tears streamed down her flushed cheeks, carving clean paths through the dust on her face as she ran blindly toward the altar, her small black patent leather shoes clicking frantically against the marble floor.

"Lily?" Lucas breathed, dropping his boutonnière. He didn't hesitate. He broke into a run, kneeling down just as the child collided with his chest, wrapping her small arms desperately around his neck.

"Daddy! Daddy, please don't let her do it!" Lily sobbed into his lapel, her tiny frame shaking violently.

Lucas pulled her back, holding her shoulders, his face pale with sudden dread. "Lily, sweetheart, what's wrong? What happened?"

Lily turned, her tear-filled eyes pointing a trembling finger toward the archway where Elena stood frozen.

"She said... she said after today... I wouldn't be family anymore," Lily gasped out, her words tumbling over each other. "She said she was sending me away to a school far, far away where nobody knows my name. And she said... she said once you sign the papers, you won't love me either because you'll have a new family with her!"

The silence that fell over the courtyard was absolute. You could hear the distant splashing of the estate fountain and the rustling of the oak leaves in the evening wind. Two hundred guests sat paralyzed, exchanging stunned glances. Whispers began to ripple through the front rows like wind across grass.

Lucas slowly stood up, keeping Lily clutched tightly to his side with one arm. He turned to face the bride.

The calm, beatific expression that had graced magazine covers across the state completely vanished from Elena's face. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. Her hands—manicured, adorned with a five-carat diamond engagement ring—suddenly clenched into white-knuckled fists, digging so hard into the delicate fabric of her wedding gown that the silk began to strain.

"Elena," Lucas said, his voice dropping into a low, menacing register that made several guests in the front row flinch. "What is she talking about?"

May you like

Elena swallowed hard, her chest heaving beneath the heavy lace bodice. She took a step forward, her voice a breathless, trembling imitation of innocence. "Lucas, please... everyone is watching. Let's not make a scene. I can explain. It's just a misunderstanding—children have such wild imaginations, you know how stress affects them—"

"Don't you dare," Lucas interrupted, his voice rising, vibrating with a lethal combination of fury and terror. "Don't you dare call her a liar. Tell me what you said to my daughter."
