Chapter 3 - THE HIDDEN SEAM AND THE SEVERED ILLUSION
Elena took a half-step backward, her heels clicking sharply against the polished stone. Panic, raw and unadulterated, flickered in her ice-blue eyes. She realized in that instant that her carefully constructed, twelve-month chess match was unraveling in real-time, exposed under the merciless glare of television cameras and society elites.
As she backed away from Lucas and the trembling child, her heel caught on the heavy, multi-layered tulle hem of her own train.
With a sharp, tearing sound, a hidden, reinforced seam along the inner lining of her skirt—ingeniously tailored to smuggle small documents or valuables—suddenly ripped open from waist to hem.
Thud.
A thick, legal-sized manila envelope slipped from the secret lining of the gown and landed squarely at Lucas’s polished leather shoes. The white ties holding it shut had come undone during the tear, spilling a cascade of crisp, printed papers onto the marble floor.
Lucas stared down at the documents.
The top page was emblazoned with the official letterhead of Sterling, Vance & Associates, his own corporate law firm. But it wasn't a corporate merger. Bold, capital letters stared up at him: PETITION FOR GUARDIANSHIP AND TERMINATION OF PARENTAL RIGHTS, followed by the full legal name of his daughter: LILY ANNE VANCE.
Lucas’s face went cold. The color drained entirely from his skin, leaving him looking like a marble statue in the twilight.
He dropped to one knee, ignoring the dirt from the marble floor, and scooped up the papers. His eyes scanned the dense legal jargon with the speed of a machine. Every clause, every paragraph, every notary stamp was chillingly real.
The document granted sole, irrevocable guardianship and power of attorney of Lily Anne Vance to Elena Rostova in the event of Lucas's incapacitation or—and this was the clause that made his blood run black—in the event of a "voluntary relinquishment" signed within six months of marriage. Furthermore, it included a binding clause stipulating that upon the signing of the post-nuptial asset merger, Lily would be immediately transferred to The Oaks Boarding Academy, an isolated, highly restrictive disciplinary facility in rural Montana known for strict isolation policies.
Attached to the legal petition was a handwritten ledger—Elena’s personal notes.
Lucas’s eyes tracked down the columns of numbers and names. Step 1: Infiltrate Vance household. Step 2: Isolate child from domestic staff (completed). Step 3: Secure marriage license and community property rights (today). Step 4: Execute guardianship transfer and dispatch child to Montana facility (T+7 days). Step 5: File for emergency medical incapacitation of L. Vance utilizing prescribed nighttime sedatives...
Lucas stopped breathing.

The sedatives. For the past three months, he had been waking up with chronic, bone-deep exhaustion, suffering from brain fog and memory lapses, which his doctor had bafflingly dismissed as stress. Elena had lovingly brewed him a "special calming herbal tea" every single night before bed.
He slowly rose to his feet. The manila envelope trembled in his grip. The silence of the guests was deafening; everyone sensed that a catastrophic storm was about to break.
