Chapter 13 - The Darkness Beneath the Floorboards

The tactical monitor above the console flickered once, twice, and then completely transformed into a stark, blinking warning screen displaying a flashing red countdown timer.

CRITICAL CORE FAILURE IN THIRTY MINUTES.

Roman’s gaze snapped from Julian’s face to the glowing red numbers on the screen, his mind calculating the catastrophic implications of the automated diagnostic failure.

"You rigged the estate’s geothermal generator," Roman stated, his voice dangerously low as the pieces of Julian’s infiltration finally clicked into absolute focus.

"If that core overheats, the entire subterranean level—including the panic shelter where Elena and Lily are currently hiding—will become a sealed iron oven."

Julian let out a soft, genuine laugh, pushing himself away from the console and taking two slow, deliberate steps toward his armed nephew without a shred of fear.

"Smart boy," Julian mocked, stopping just two feet away from the muzzle of Roman’s gun, staring directly down the dark barrel with defiant arrogance.

"You can shoot me right now, Roman. But the override code required to vent the geothermal core is locked behind a biometric multi-signature encrypted in my personal offshore server."

"If I die, the cooling valves remain permanently sealed, and Blackridge Estate becomes a smoking crater within thirty minutes, taking everyone inside down with it."

Roman’s breath hitched in his throat for a split second, the cold, calculating detachment he prided himself on suddenly threatening to fracture under the sheer weight of Lily and Elena’s mortal danger.

He couldn't shoot Julian. Not yet. Not until he extracted the override code and vented the overheating core safely away from the residential wings of the mansion.

"You're a monster," Roman whispered, his grip on the sidearm trembling slightly as rage and desperation warred for dominance inside his chest.

"I'm a survivor, Roman," Julian corrected coldly, stepping past the barrel of the gun with absolute impunity, reaching out to adjust the collar of his tailored overcoat.

"And now, we're going to have a civilized conversation upstairs in your office about how you're going to sign over full operational control of the waterfront to my syndicate."

Before Julian could take another step toward the exit corridor, the heavy steel door of the control room was violently kicked open from the outside with a deafening crash.

Garrett and three heavily armed Blackridge loyalists poured into the room, their assault rifles raised and locked directly onto Julian Hail’s chest.

"Boss! We secured the perimeter gates, but the security grid went dark across the whole estate—" Garrett stopped mid-sentence, his eyes widening as he recognized the man standing beside Roman.

"Julian Hail," Garrett muttered, his finger tightening on the trigger of his rifle. "We thought you were dead for twenty years."

"Put your weapons down, Garrett," Roman ordered flatly, his voice carrying an exhausted, absolute authority that made the loyal captain hesitate in utter confusion.

"Boss? He's the one who compromised the core—" Garrett protested, lowering his rifle just an inch while keeping his lethal focus on Julian.

"I said, stand down," Roman repeated, lowering his own sidearm into its holster with slow, agonizing deliberation. "We're going to the master office. All of us."

Julian smiled triumphantly, turning on his heel and walking leisurely out of the control room toward the private elevator, knowing he had successfully checkmated the master of Blackridge.
