Chapter 6 - The Ashes of the Outer Gate and the Smoke on the Horizon

The morning sun over Blackridge Estate broke through a heavy, unnatural fog that smelled sharply of burnt rubber, high-octane diesel, and scorched iron.
Just three miles down the coastal access road, the charred skeleton of a Geneva council transport van smoldered quietly against the concrete barrier of the perimeter check-point.
Roman stood on the elevated stone balcony of the East Wing, his fingers resting casually on the cold wrought-iron railing while he watched the estate cleanup crews wash away the debris.
Elena stood just a step behind him, wrapped tightly in a thick wool shawl, holding a fresh cup of coffee as she gazed out toward the distant tree line where the access road vanished.
"They didn't even wait twenty-four hours," Elena said quietly, her voice carrying a fragile edge of tension that she couldn't entirely mask beneath her calm exterior.
"The council sent an entire vanguard straight down the main road last night, fully expecting to walk through our gates while the command structure was still fractured."
Roman took a slow sip of his coffee, his eyes narrowing as he tracked a flock of sea gulls scattering frantically above the distant treeline where another hidden watchtower was located.
"They thought Dominic and Vance were still operating the master console," Roman replied, his voice a low, steady rumble that vibrated through the crisp morning air.
"They thought a coordinated blitz would paralyze Blackridge before I could figure out who was pulling the trigger from the inside."
"Instead, they walked right into a fully operational kill zone managed by men who hadn't betrayed their oath," Elena noted, stepping up beside him to look down at the courtyard below.
In the center of the estate yard, Vance—stripped of his custom Italian suit and dressed in coarse laborer overalls—was currently sweeping up the shattered glass of the ruined supercar.
He moved with a robotic, exhausted humiliation, his eyes permanently fixed on the asphalt as the remaining loyal guards watched him with cold, unforgiving vigilance from the guard towers.
"He’ll be sweeping that courtyard for the next ten years," Roman remarked without a shred of sympathy in his tone. "Treasure bought with blood always costs a lifetime of labor."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors behind them on the balcony clicked open, and Lily trotted out onto the stone patio wearing her favorite yellow boots and clutching a plastic shovel.
She marched right up to Roman’s leg, tugging insistently on the hem of his dark trousers until he looked down with that instant, transformative softening of his harsh features.
"Uncle Roman! The sandbox in the garden has big rocks in it, and my little red car can't climb over them!" Lily announced with the supreme gravity of a commander reporting a tactical crisis.
Roman immediately crouched down to her eye level, ignoring the cold morning dew dampening his knees against the stone balcony floor.
"Is that right, General Lily? Then we'll have to launch a full-scale excavation mission right after breakfast to clear those rocks out of your supply lines," Roman promised solemnly.
Lily beamed brightly, throwing her small arms around his neck in an uninhibited hug that made the terrifying mafia boss look like the most devoted father on earth.
Elena watched them, feeling a deep, radiating warmth bloom in her chest that chased away the lingering ghosts of the terror they had survived less than twenty-four hours ago.
She had spent years hiding in the shadows of various estates, always moving whenever the local syndicates or criminal networks became too volatile for a single mother trying to raise a child.
But here, standing on the balcony of Blackridge Estate with a man who commanded waterfront freight routes and terrified international councils, she felt an absolute sense of safety.
Because Roman Hail didn't just protect his territory; he protected the people who had looked out for him when his own trusted commanders had sold him down the river.
"There’s a shipment coming in at Dock Four this afternoon," Roman said softly, standing back up while keeping one of his large hands resting gently on Lily’s small shoulder.
"Industrial mining equipment from the Scandinavian syndicate. It’s completely legal on paper, but the Geneva council will likely try to intercept the convoy to test our new security grid."
May you like
Elena looked up at him, her brows furrowing slightly with sudden concern. "You're going down to the docks yourself?"
"I am," Roman nodded firmly. "And this time, we aren't waiting for them to make the first move. We're going to show the council that Blackridge doesn't play defense anymore."
