Chapter 4 - The Voice from Geneva and the Ultimatum at the Gates

The encrypted speakerphone hummed with static before a cold, aristocratic voice echoed clearly through the high-ceilinged office, filling the room with an international aura of threat.

"Hail. We expected a very different phone call this afternoon, one regarding a tragic vehicular accident on the winding drive leading up to your estate," the voice from Geneva stated smoothly.

Roman didn't blink, keeping his dark eyes fixed on Vance, who was still trembling on the floor, listening intently to the conversation that would seal their collective fate.

"You've grown sloppy over the years, Councilman," Roman replied, his voice dripping with icy contempt as he leaned casually against the edge of the mahogany desk.

"Sending a couple of corrupt security commanders and a third-rate truck driver to take out the head of Blackridge? I expected better from the grand architects of the European syndicate."

A heavy, tense silence stretched across the phone line for several seconds before the voice from Geneva responded, losing its polite facade and hardening into an open declaration of war.

"You brought instability into our operations, Roman. You integrated unknowns—civilians—into the inner perimeter of the most powerful logistics network in the hemisphere."

"That makes you a liability. And liabilities in our line of work are terminated before they can compromise the entire infrastructure of our global trade routes."

Roman let out a low, humorless chuckle, his fingers tapping a slow, rhythmic beat against the wooden surface of the desk as he formulated his counter-strike.

"Liability," Roman repeated the word with a cold edge. "Let me tell you what a real liability looks like, Councilman. It looks like eleven years of compromised security rotting away inside my own estate."

"It looks like trusted commanders trading syndicate secrets for empty promises of promotion from a bunch of old men sitting safely behind marble desks in Switzerland."

"And soon," Roman continued, his voice dropping an octave lower into a terrifying register, "it will look like every single operative you send to Blackridge Estate ending up in unmarked graves."

The councilman on the other end let out a sharp, dismissive sigh, clearly unimpressed by the theatrical display of defiance coming from the isolated waterfront compound.

"You forget yourself, Hail. The outer perimeter guards are ours. The freight lines are financed by our accounts. You are entirely surrounded, cut off from supply lines and reinforcements."

"Surrounded?" Roman tilted his head, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corners of his lips as he glanced toward the master security console glowing on the wall.

"Councilman, look at your outer perimeter monitor feeds right now. See if your loyal guards are still standing at their posts, or if they've found a new appreciation for the concrete."

On the secure video monitor beside the desk, the camera feed from the eastern gate flickered before displaying a synchronized takedown executed by Roman’s true loyalists.

Within thirty seconds, the entire outer guard contingent of the syndicate council was disarmed, bound, and kneeling in the mud while Blackridge loyalists secured the perimeter.

The line from Geneva went dead silent.

The aristocratic voice had vanished, replaced only by the heavy, panicking breathing of the councilman realizing his entire vanguard had been neutralized in less than two minutes.

"You... you anticipated the betrayal," the councilman stammered, his polished composure completely shattering under the weight of Roman’s absolute tactical dominance.

"I anticipated human greed, Councilman. It’s the one predictable variable in a world built on violence," Roman stated coldly before slamming the heavy handset back onto its cradle.

Elena watched him with a mixture of awe and absolute terror, realizing that Roman Hail wasn't just a mafia boss—he was a master tactician playing a game three moves ahead of everyone else.

Lily, completely unfazed by the geopolitical warfare unfolding in the room, tugged gently on Elena’s sleeve, holding up her red toy car with an expectant look in her wide, innocent eyes.

"Mommy, can we go outside now? The red lights are hurting my eyes," Lily asked softly, her voice cutting through the heavy, oppressive tension of the room like a ray of pure sunshine.

Roman looked down at the little girl, the hard, lethal lines of his face instantly melting away into a profound, protective warmth that startled even himself.

May you like

He crouched down to Lily’s eye level, ignoring the blood on his knuckles and the chaos surrounding them, and gently tapped the hood of her red toy car.

"Not just yet, princess," Roman said gently, his voice soft and tender. "We have to wait just a little longer while Uncle Roman cleans up the rest of the garbage in the yard."
