Chapter 14 - The Ultimatum in the Master Office

The master office on the top floor of the mansion felt suffocatingly warm as the geothermal warning alarms from the basement began to slowly bleed their ambient heat upward.

Julian sat comfortably in the oversized leather armchair behind the mahogany desk—the very seat where Roman had torn up the false alibi statement just days prior.

Roman stood near the reinforced windows, his arms crossed over his chest, staring out at the courtyard where Vance was still quietly sweeping the asphalt below, completely oblivious to the doom ticking beneath their feet.

Garrett and two loyal operatives stood guard by the heavy oak doors, their assault rifles held at ready, their jaws clenched in silent, suppressed fury as they watched Julian make himself at home.

"Twenty-two minutes remaining until core meltdown," the automated digital voice chimed softly from the secondary wall console, ticking down the seconds with agonizing, relentless precision.

"You're cutting it close, Roman," Julian observed casually, picking up Lily’s small red toy car that still rested on the edge of the mahogany desk and turning it over in his manicured fingers.

"Sign the transfer papers. Hand over the Blackridge shipping manifests, the Swiss holding accounts, and the master keys to the waterfront docks."

"Do that right now, and I'll generate the override code on my encrypted terminal to vent your geothermal core before it turns this lovely estate into a mass grave."

Roman didn't flinch, keeping his dark, piercing eyes locked onto his uncle with a cold, predatory focus that made Julian’s triumphant smile falter just a fraction.

"You really think I built this empire without installing redundant manual override protocols?" Roman asked quietly, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, terrifying calm.

Julian stopped playing with the red toy car, slamming it down onto the desk with a sharp plastic clatter as his aristocratic composure finally cracked beneath the weight of doubt.

"You don't have the manual codes," Julian snapped back defensively. "I personally rewrote the thermal relay architecture in 2008. Without my biometric signature, those valves are welded shut!"

"You rewrote the relays, Julian," Roman acknowledged, taking a slow, deliberate step toward the mahogany desk until he was towering directly over his seated uncle.

"But you forgot who spent the last fifteen years tearing down every wall of this estate and rebuilding it with engineers you've never even met."

Before Julian could formulate a response, the private service door behind the bookshelf clicked open, and Elena stepped into the master office, holding Lily firmly by the hand.

She looked calm, steady, and entirely unafraid, carrying a small, heavy black metal case that she had retrieved from the estate’s deep archival vault.

"Elena, I told you to stay in the panic shelter," Roman said, his voice instantly softening with immediate, protective concern as he turned toward them.

"The panic shelter shares an air intake with the geothermal core, Roman. If it overheats down there, we'd suffocate anyway," Elena replied evenly, walking straight up to the mahogany desk.

She placed the heavy black metal case down right in front of Julian Hail, popping the brass latches open with a sharp, echoing snap.

Inside the case sat an old, heavy-duty analog bypass switch wired directly to the estate's original 1990s emergency power grid—a system completely disconnected from the digital master console Julian had just hijacked.

Julian stared down at the analog box in absolute horror, his face draining entirely of color as he realized the fatal flaw in his master plan.

"An analog hard-wire bypass," Julian whispered in sheer disbelief. "You can't... you didn't keep the legacy hardware active..."

May you like

"I never trust a system I can't physically disconnect with my own hands," Roman stated coldly, reaching down to rest his hand over the heavy metal toggle switch.

"Seventeen minutes left on your countdown, Julian. Would you like to re-evaluate your negotiation terms before I flip this switch?"
