Chapter 12 - The Final Balance Sheet

Back in Chicago, as evening settled over the city and the towering skyscrapers began to twinkle with millions of electric lights, I sat alone on the private balcony of my penthouse apartment overlooking Lake Michigan.

The lake stretched out endlessly into the dark horizon, calm, deep, and impossibly vast.

I held a glass of crisp white wine in my hand, swirling the liquid slowly as I looked out over the glittering cityscape.

My phone rested on the glass table beside me, silent and dark.

No frantic midnight calls from desperate business partners.

No screaming threats from a paranoid, abusive husband.

No hidden ledgers, no laundered funds, and no secrets waiting to be uncovered in the dark.

For the first time in my life, my personal balance sheet was entirely clear.

Assets: Absolute freedom, unwavering strength, a thriving foundation dedicated to public good, and a future built entirely on my own terms.

Liabilities: Zero.

I raised my glass toward the horizon in a quiet, solitary toast to the woman I had been, the woman I was forced to become, and the architect I finally allowed myself to be.

"Here's to the audit," I whispered into the cool evening breeze.

Then, I took a sip, turned away from the glass door, and stepped back inside my home—completely unshakable, completely free, and ready for whatever chapter came next.
