Chapter 6 - The Midnight Confession and the Freezing of the Cayman Vaults

The flashing red and blue lights of the squad cars painted the cold, wet tarmac of the O’Hare private aviation hangar in a harsh, rhythmic strobe.
Ethan Vance was shoved unceremoniously into the back of a black and white cruiser, his bespoke designer overcoat dragging against the muddy floorboards as the rear door slammed shut with a heavy, final thud.
Detective Thomas Miller stood by the open passenger window, watching through the rain-streaked glass as the fallen real-estate tycoon slumped against the seat, his breathing shallow and erratic.
"You're making a catastrophic mistake," Ethan snarled, his voice muffled through the glass as he pressed his handcuffed wrists against the frame. "My attorneys will have me out on bail before sunrise. I demand to make my phone call!"
"You can make as many calls as you want, Ethan," Miller replied evenly, leaning down slightly to meet his eyes. "Though I suspect your offshore banking partners in the Cayman Islands aren't going to be picking up."
Ethan's eyes widened in a sudden flash of stark terror. "What are you talking about?"
Miller pulled a small, secure military-grade tablet from his trench coat, tapping the screen to display a live, encrypted financial tracking dashboard. "While you were busy packing your duffel bag for a one-way trip, a court-ordered emergency asset freeze was transmitted directly to the Central Bank of the Cayman Islands."
He turned the screen toward the window so Ethan could read the bold red lettering flashing across the display:
STATUS: ACCOUNTS FROZEN — SECURED BY FEDERAL WRIT.
"Your mistress, Elena Rostova, and your COO, Marcus Thorne, were picked up by federal agents at the private terminal twenty minutes before you arrived," Miller continued, his tone devoid of any sympathy. "They didn't even wait for you to step off the tarmac, Ethan. The moment the cuffs went on Marcus, he handed over the master decryption keys to your shell companies in exchange for a plea deal on the embezzlement charges. Every single dollar of that $2.8 million municipal grant—plus every hidden asset you scraped together—is currently sitting in a secured federal receivership account under the exclusive legal control of your wife."
Ethan’s mouth opened, but no words came out.
His jaw slackened, and the arrogant, untouchable developer vanished entirely, leaving behind only a terrified, cornered criminal staring into the abyss of his own ruin.
"You... you took everything," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking into a ragged, pathetic wheeze. "She took everything..."
May you like
"She didn't take anything, Ethan," Miller said, snapping the tablet shut with a sharp click. "You built a house of cards on quicksand, and she simply handed you the shovel. See you at the arraignment."
The squad car engine revved, its tires spraying wet gravel across the tarmac as it pulled away from the hangar, disappearing into the dark, rainy Chicago night.
