Chapter 9 - The Final Audit and the Reclaimed Future

The heavy oak doors of the courtroom clicked shut behind us as the spectators filed out, leaving the chamber quiet and empty once again.
I stood by the wooden railing, leaning lightly on my cane, watching the bailiffs lead Ethan away down the secure corridor through the reinforced glass doors, his orange-trimmed jumpsuit disappearing into the gray shadows of the holding wing.
Marcus Thorne and Elena Rostova were already facing their respective federal indictments in neighboring jurisdictions, pleading guilty in exchange for reduced sentences, while the remnants of Vance Properties were systematically dismantled, liquidated, and absorbed into a newly established philanthropic foundation dedicated to urban housing development—a foundation legally registered and solely controlled by its new president and CEO: Claire Vance.

"It's all yours, Claire," Miller said quietly, offering a warm, respectful smile. "The accounts are cleared, the empire is legally transferred, and the federal audit is officially closed."
I opened the envelope, sliding out the paperwork and looking down at the signature line where my maiden name—and my new corporate title—were embossed in crisp, bold lettering.
"Thank you, Thomas," I said softly, looking up from the documents. "For everything."
"Just doing my job," Miller replied, tipping his hat before turning to leave me in the quiet courtroom.
I stood there alone for a long moment, listening to the absolute stillness of the room, feeling the heavy burden of the past five years completely lift from my shoulders.
