Chapter 5 - The Ultimatum at Thirty Thousand Feet

The trap was set, baited, and ready to snap shut.

At 8:00 PM on a rainy Thursday evening, while I was still resting in my guarded hospital room under post-operative observation, a secure encrypted message popped up on Detective Miller’s departmental tablet.

It was an intercepted flight manifest from O’Hare International Airport.

Private Charter Flight 409 to the Cayman Islands.

Passengers on board: Marcus Thorne and Elena Rostova.

And booking a one-way ticket to meet them on that same private jet, scheduled to depart at midnight, was Ethan Vance.

He had decided to cut his losses, abandon his failing real estate empire, leave his COO and his mistress to take the fall for the embezzlement, and flee the country with whatever liquid cash he could scrape together from his remaining secret accounts.

Except there was just one tiny, fatal flaw in his brilliant escape plan.

When Ethan arrived at the private aviation terminal at O’Hare, slipping past the security gates in his tailored overcoat with a single leather duffel bag slung over his shoulder, he didn't find Marcus and Elena waiting for him inside the luxurious terminal lounge.

Instead, he found Detective Thomas Miller and three federal marshals standing in the dimly lit hangar beside a grounded Gulfstream jet.

Ethan froze, his hand slipping off the zipper of his duffel bag as the cold metal of handcuffs was slammed onto his wrists before he could even draw a breath.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Ethan roared, twisting violently as the marshals forced him down against the wing of the private jet. "Do you know who I am?! I am a prominent real estate developer! You can't touch me without a federal warrant!"

Detective Miller stepped forward out of the shadows, holding a crisp, multi-page legal document up to the hangar lights.

"We have a federal warrant, Mr. Vance," Miller said calmly, his voice echoing off the concrete floor. "Signed by Judge Harrison less than an hour ago. Charges include wire fraud, embezzlement of federal funds, tampering with evidence, and attempted premeditated murder."

Ethan’s face went completely slack, the color draining from his cheeks as the reality of his total, absolute defeat crashed down upon him.

"Murder?" he whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic, desperate whine. "That's ridiculous! Claire is alive! She's recovering in the hospital! You can't charge me with murder!"

"Not murder, Mr. Vance," Miller corrected smoothly, snapping the final cuffs into place. "Attempted murder. And let me assure you, your wife had a very special message for you before we picked you up."

Miller reached into his coat pocket, pulled out my shattered smartphone, and hit play on the voice recording file from the night of the crash.

“You should’ve signed the papers, Claire,” Ethan’s own calm, chilling voice echoed across the quiet airplane hangar, bouncing off the metal fuselage of the grounded jet. “It would have been so much cleaner if you just took the buyout and walked away...”

The audio looped, playing the sound of tearing metal and the shriek of failing brakes over and over again into the empty hangar.

Ethan stared down at the concrete floor, his knees finally buckling beneath him as the federal marshals hauled him up by his elbows and marched him toward the waiting squad car.

The empire built on lies, embezzlement, and attempted murder had officially collapsed.
